Arpana Tamang

Hi, my name is Arpana Tamang and I've been in AQ Photo for three years with Mr.Sappinton and I'm continuing photo in AP Studio Art with Ms.Delello! AQ has provided me with so many different opportunities to explore photography, from film photography all the way to digital. I am submitting a 2D portfolio consisting of digital and film photographs some of which includes collages/threadwork.

My SI topic is an exploration of my Nepali and American Identity and how it intermingles together through my perspective. The work shown below are all how I interpret the two cultures representing them in either a symbolic or physical way.

Ama - Film

This piece is dedicated to my mother, one of the only person in my life and in this country who teaches me about my culture. My mom and I are the physical emboiment of traditonal and modern Nepali culture. Using an older picture of her and a picture me taken on a point and shoot, I was able to collage our picture into one coherant one. I also used red thred to physically and symbolically bind us together, overall, to showcase that although we were in different times in different places we still represent our culture through our respective perspective one way or another.

The backround text is a Bible verse in nepali. In Nepali romaji it reads, "Aansu ko saathma chharehurule aanand ko geet gaudai katani garne chhan" Pslams 5:136 A brief explanation of the passage would be that you may sow your seeds while crying, but you will reap what you sowed with happiness.
