On 23 November 2022, a group of Form 2 and Form 4 students attended the fifth lesson of the Aspara Hydroponics Course. Students conducted an experiment investigating the effects of different nutrient concentrations on plant growth by adding different amounts of nutrition powder to the Aspara STEM Smart Grower. To gather information for analysis, apart from comparing the height and color of the experimental vegetables, the students will invite teachers and classmates to taste the fully-grown vegetables and comment on the taste, smell and texture after the lesson.

During the fourth session of the Aspara Hydroponics Course conducted on 9 November 2022, a group of Form 2 and Form 4 students investigated how concentration of nutrients affects the growth of plants using the STEM Smart Grower. After adding different amounts of nutrients to the respective machines for two weeks, they discovered that excess nutrients will hinder the growth of the vegetables, based on the observation that plants’ color became darker while the texture of the leaves got old and soggy. They also learned about how different colors of light affect the plants’ growth by comparing the effects of LED lights and natural daylight have on the growing speed and taste of the plants.

A group of Form 2 and Form 4 students attended the third lesson of the Aspara Hydroponics Course on 26 October 2022. In the lesson, students designed an experiment to investigate how concentration of nutrients affects the growth of plants. After labeling the plants for the experiment, they added different amounts of nutrients to the respective Aspara machines and started to collect data for analysis. Through the programme, they acquired practical knowledge about plant nutrition, such as the importance of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) and ways to identify nutrient deficiency in plants by observing the leaves

On 19 October 2022, a group of Form 2 and Form 4 students started to grow their own plants using the Aspara STEM Smart Grower in the Chinese Mitten Crabs Aquaponics Room. During their second lesson of the Aspara Hydroponics Course, they placed the sprouts on the Smart Grower and were taught the procedures of using the machine, including filling nutrients, adding water to the tank, and pairing up the machine with their smartphones using the App aspara® to collect data for daily monitoring and experimental uses. Students who are interested in growing plants are welcome to join our programme!
