Project Description:
This is a pioneering project (first in Hong Kong) to raise freshwater pearls. Taught by an external organization, students investigate the life cycle and industry of bivalves through the programme.

On 10 May 2023, students attended the last session of the Freshwater Pearl Course. During the session, students were invited to present their learning outcomes and share their views on humanities, STEAM, ecosystem and sustainability. Not only did they gain first-hand experience of cultivating freshwater pearls, they also developed a sense of responsibility to be eco-friendly.

On 4 May 2023, ten students attended the 7th lesson of the Freshwater Pearl Course. During the lesson, students were taught to make pearl bracelets and artworks using the shells of the freshwater pearl mussels. Students had a great time working together to create their beautiful artworks which demonstrated their love of nature. Their products are on display in the STEAM Room.

Ten Form 4 students attended the 6th lesson of the Freshwater Pearl Course on 26 April 2023. During the lesson, instructors introduced the internal structure and characteristics of the freshwater pearl mussels and demonstrated how to obtain pearls from the mussels. It was a great learning opportunity for students to experience cultivating freshwater pearls from raising the mussels to getting the pearls.

On 19 April 2023, seven Form 4 students who joined the Freshwater Pearl Course attended a workshop on Leave No Trace (LNT), which is a set of ethics promoting conservation of the natural area resources. During the workshop, not only did students learn about the concept and importance of LNT, but also discussed how to make the best use of the pearls cultivated and their by-products in a sustainable manner. In the coming lessons, students will have the opportunity to experience the process of harvesting pearls and making their own pearl jewelries.

Twenty-one Form 4 Biology students attended a course on freshwater pearl mussels on 22 March 2023. Through the sharing of an aquaculture expert, our students learned about the biological characteristics of Mollusca and how it benefits the ecosystem of Hong Kong. During the course, they set up a control experiment to observe the ability of Freshwater Pearl to purify water. The course encouraged students to think critically about the impact of human activities on the environment.

Twenty-one Form 4 Biology students attended a course on freshwater pearl mussels on 15 March 2023. Through the sharing of an aquaculture expert, Mr David Wong, our students learned how freshwater pearl mussels help purify water and can be used to tackle the climate change issue. During the course, our students were provided with the opportunity to dissect freshwater pearl mussels and experience first-hand the freshwater pearl mussel body structure.

Twenty-one Form 4 Biology students attended a course on freshwater pearl mussels on 8 March 2023. Through the sharing of an aquaculture expert, our students learned about the ecological importance of freshwater pearl mussels and the daily operations of farming freshwater pearl mussels. Students are also provided with opportunities to practise daily operations and techniques. From the course, our students learned a lot from first-hand experience and showed great confidence in raising freshwater mussels.

On 1 March 2023, eleven students attended the first lesson of the Freshwater Pearl Course. Instructors from external organizations gave a brief introduction about pearl development in the aspects of history, life science, and technological development. Through the course, students learned more about the diverse uses of pearls and the environmental conditions for cultivating freshwater pearls.
