English for Academic Purposes provides opportunities for English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners to develop and apply academic language within meaningful cross-curricular contexts. EAP 20L provides students with the opportunity to explore global issues (e.g., environmental and social) that impact the world. In this course students will research topics of personal interest, make connections with their own worldview and present information to their classmates as a means of persuading them to believe in what is important to them.
These classes are designed for English language learners who want additional support in their other subject areas. Students will receive one-on-one help with their homework, often leading to better understanding and higher marks. They receive valuable extra time to focus on their studies. Students do not receive a credit for the class.
These courses have the same outcomes and themes as the regular English, Science, and History courses. However, only English as an additional language students will be in the class, allowing the teacher (an EAL specialist) to use instruction and assessment strategies more appropriate for the English language learner. Students earn a credit for each course upon successful completion.
