Tying your belt

Ukemi
Falling is part of judo, so it's important to learn how to do it right! This video shows how to properly execute some of the basic and most often used ukemi (breakfall) techniques.
Judo uses a system represented by coloured belts to signify a judoka's progress through obtaining judo skill and knowledge. The first set of belt grades are called Kyu grades, and range from White to Brown. The next step is to the Dan grades (black belt), beginning with Shodan (1st degree).
The syllabus below is a general guideline regarding the skill and fitness level a judoka should be at in order to reach each Kyu grade level. This is a guideline only, your Sensei will test you for your next belt level when you are ready and may have some additional expectations of you.
As of April 2021 a new syllabus has been provided. The poster below shows the expected nage-waza (throwing techniques) at each belt level.
