Physical Education Philosophy
Education of the Physical
Or
Education Through the Physical
The physical education program will provide access to a balanced, progressive, and developmentally appropriate program based on the New York State and National standards.
The program will adapt to meet the physical needs of all students using inclusive strategies. It is the unique role of the “New Physical Education” program to help all students develop health related fitness, physical competence, cognitive understanding, and positive attitudes about physical activity so that they can adapt healthy and physically active lifestyles.
Philosophical Assumptions
We believe that Physical Education…….
Promotes learning through a variety of movement experiences.
Sets the foundation for pursuit and development of physical fitness.
Develops, teaches and provides the opportunity for mastery of various movement skills.
Develops an understanding and appreciation of lifetime physical activities.
Enhances cognitive skills such as problem solving, decision-making and creative thinking.
Promotes self-understanding and acceptance of others.
Encourages regular use of community resources.
Encourages positive social interaction through sportsmanship, respect and cooperation.
Provides and environment for students to apply learned skills and strategies.
Provides and environment for students to apply safety for self and others.
Provides opportunity for enjoyment and self-expression.
Provides students with the opportunity to use a variety of communication skills.
“Physical Education is the only subject in which by the very nature of its content has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life.” (Sidentop)
Mission Statement
Physical Education will provide an individualized, developmentally appropriate, and personally challenging instructional program that will advance the knowledge, confidence, skills and motivation needed to engage in a lifelong, healthy, active lifestyle.
"Physical Education is the only subject which, by the very nature of its content, has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life" Allen Russell.
Rational for Physical Education
Physical Education is about educating students as a whole; mind, body and social. The main goal is to create a Physically Educated Person. A physically educated person: has the skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities, is physically fit, participates regularly in physical activity, knows the implications and benefits of involvement in physical activity and values physical activity and its contributions to a healthy lifestyle. This will enable students to: evaluate their own fitness levels in five different health related fitness areas (body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility) set fitness goals to maintain or progress towards health enhancing levels of fitness, indentify the activities and sports that will contribute to the program, and use the principles of fitness to develop a program of activities.
