Planning is completed using the school's templates. Teachers plan within their teams where appropriate following the Annual Plan or topics/concepts.
Our Curriculum Structure
Sommerville has 2 curricula to meet the learning needs of our learners aged 5 to 21.
The expanded and adapted New Zealand curriculum for students aged from 5 up to 14 years of age.
The Transition Curriculum caters for students aged 14-21 years.
Both curricula at Sommerville are structured into 3 phases of learning. These are Explore, Discover and Navigate.
Explore - This incorporates the beginning concepts needed in each learning area. Learning through exploration is a key part of this phase.
Discover - This includes some progress steps from Phase 1 of the Refreshed NZ Curriculum (Te Mātaiaho).
Navigate - This takes students beyond Phase 1 of the Refreshed NZ Curriculum (Te Mātaiaho).
The curriculum at Sommerville covers all 8 Learning Areas.
English, Mathematics and Statistics, Social Sciences, Science, The Arts, Technology, Health & Physical Education, Learning Languages
Learning is organised using the Do, Know and Understand structure.
