Social Science involves our learners identifying their connection to the whenua and the history of the land in our local community. Learners will develop their own understanding of how the past has shaped the future.
Using a multisensory approach, Social Studies is taught at different levels across the school with Aotearoa New Zealand Histories as a component. This allows for learners to develop their own understanding at their level. This approach includes listening, speaking, reading, tactile and kinesthetic learning.
Māori history is recognised as the foundation of all Aotearoa New Zealand history. Change through colonisation and settlement plays a fundamental role in how the past has shaped the present. Social Sciences and ANZH is taught as an integrated unit alongside other curriculum areas.
Through planned, meaningful lessons learners are given opportunities to develop their understanding of a wide range of topics at local, national and international levels. Through these experiences students learn how connections and interactions between people in the past have influenced decisions made by different people and how these decisions influence people in the present.
Social Sciences and ANZH will be integrated into the school topic where appropriate and taught once a week.
