At Sommerville, the English curriculum is designed to help learners develop the essential skills they need to read, write, and communicate effectively. We weave English into every corner of our school day and daily life, where we create a fun and engaging environment for our learners to grow, and express themselves.
While providing a language rich environment, teaching staff incorporate Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) methods in daily practice so learners develop the confidence, desire and ability to express themselves. Learners will explore and aim to foster a love of reading and writing by nurturing their imagination to connect to themselves and the world around them.
At Sommerville, we use literacy techniques from the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) and Comprehensive Literacy for All. These methods, combined with AAC, shape our English curriculum and help our learners to shine as readers, writers, and confident communicators.
Planning expectations for English: Literacy will explicitly taught every day and will also be woven through every aspect of the school day
