Know Emergency Procedures
Make sure you know where the fire extinguisher is in the design lab before using soldering equipment.
Always Monitor Soldering Equipment
Never leave a hot soldering iron unsupervised.
Always rest the soldering iron on a stand, never leave it resting on the bench.
Toxic Materials
Do not touch your face or skin when handling solder filament.
Always wear nitrile gloves when handling soldering filament.
Set Up Proper Ventilation
Make sure the external fan is on, and set up each valve as shown in the demo video.
Position intake close to your soldering station. If you smell smoke when soldering, reposition the fan closer to your station.
Prepare the Work Area
Set up your soldering station with the adjustable arms to hold the components in place.
Position a stand for the soldering iron near the ventilation system intake to minimize fume exposure.
Use an extension cord if the soldering iron’s cable is too short to reach the work area comfortably.
Heat the Soldering Iron
Plug in the soldering iron and allow it to heat up for several minutes.
Apply the Solder
Hold the soldering iron against the joint where the metal pieces need to be connected.
Introduce a small amount of soldering filament, allowing it to melt and form a connection.
Ensure the solder flows smoothly onto the metal surface, creating a solid bond.
Finish Up
Allow the joint to cool naturally.
Inspect the soldered connection for strength and conductivity.
Toxic materials
Use solution of TSP and paper towels to wipe surface after use.
Dispose of gloves, paper towel used to wipe down surface, and any bits of solder filament in the hazardous waste bin.
Personal Protective Equipment
Return all PPE to its designated area.
Put Away Soldering Equipment
Wait for soldering iron to cool completely before putting it away.
Return soldering equipment to designated shelves.
