A Rising TIDE: Action and Reflection on Teaching in Diverse Environments
“A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats”
Read our most recent 2025 volume here!
Our mission is to prepare reflective teachers to teach all kinds of learners, especially those who are often neglected in schools:
Students of color
Students with disabilities
Students from rural or urban communities
Students with English as a second language or non-English speakers
We believe that classrooms where these children flourish are good for all kids.
Our Goal
The goal of A Rising TIDE is to provide a place where teachers can share our experiences in deepening our practice — both our successes and the ideas that didn’t work out as planned. We want to extend this conversation about how to best teach all children.
The accounts in this journal are brief reports of year-long research projects. Most of these projects are action research, in which teachers carefully study and reflect their own practices. The projects grow out of extensive reviews of existing literature and represent contributors’ best efforts to address an educational problem of particular importance to them. More detailed reports have already been presented at the annual St. Mary’s College Educational Research Symposium; this volume constitutes the symposium’s proceedings.
Submissions
We welcome reports about any project carried out in the local schools. Reports should be 5000 words or less and should be submitted electronically by May 15th to mat@smcm.edu. Reports are subject to blind review. Please direct any questions, including questions about the content of format of articles, to the chair or associate chair of the educational studies faculty.
