Graphic design is the art and craft where professionals create visual content to communicate specific, targeted messages. Graphic designers apply their training in the elements and principles of design, and traditional and computer generated art to create the visual content that meets the specific needs of their audience or user. They must pull their viewer in to an image using various techniques, and then present the desired information in an engaging, organized fashion, that leads the viewer to the desired outcome - like buying a particular product, or service, or aware of a certain situation.
Graphic design is a way in which artists mold their audience's or users experiences visually. Although it stems back to ancient times and Egyptian hieroglyphics, the term "graphic design" was penned in the print industry in the early 1920's. Graphic design incorporates all sorts of visual media that communicates messages including, but not limited to logos, package design, posters, brand identity, websites, apps, and cover designs for books.
