The Studio Habit of Mind that will be explored in this unit is Develop Craft.
To develop our craft as artists we must learn to use the tools (such as wire and pencils), materials (such as paint and clay), and practices (artistic conventions like composition) of a particular art form. We must also learn to care for them in our studio space through proper cleaning and maintaining. Developing craft in an art form is also cultivated and continued over time through practice and exploration.
To observe as an artist we must learn to go beyond normal looking. Observation starts with seeing things exactly as they are and appreciating it as such. Deeper observation, the type practiced by artists, sees things very closely, notices the details that are not immediately seen, and recognizes the subtlety of what is being observed. True observation also notices the messages that are being expressed by what is being observed as well as the hidden messages too.
The ability for an artist to develop their craft in a meaningful way and to deeply observe their surroundings takes repeated practice.
