A concept is an abstract idea. Artists use different concepts to take those ideas from abstraction to reality. The concept being explored through the lens of the Studio Habits - Express and Observe is Symbolism and Metaphor.
Symbolism and Metaphor refers to an artist's use of visuals that stand for or mean something other than their literal definition. Artists have a goal or an idea that they want to communicate - this is called their intent. To communicate their intent they use widely accepted visual symbols in an artwork including objects, figures, and even colors. An artwork that is comprised of symbols and metaphors creates a theme - or big idea - that an artist is passionate about and wants to share with their viewers.
Being Explored in this Project
Anticipation in animation refers to the smaller motion or movement that a character does before the main action to prepare for it and to clue the audience into what will be happening next.
Follow through and Overlapping action in animation refers to when parts of the body - like arms, hair, tails, etc. - drag behind the motion of the body after it occurs and then continues for a bit after the main motion has stopped.
Explore through the lens of Disney Animation Studios what makes a strong character design.
Designing Your Character
Think about your character. Who are they? What do they do? What motivates them? What is their personality like? These are all factors that contribute what the character will physically look like. Once you know who your character is, you can use "shape language" to draw them so that your audience has visual cues to as to who they are in their personality.
