Counseling and Psychological Services

Whether you are struggling with stress, depression, anxiety or relationship problems, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is available to provide the support you need to succeed at SJSU. In their current state of remote online instruction, CAPS is providing all of its services through confidential telehealth sessions. Their hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM; and Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Contact Counseling and Psychological Services to learn how to access each of their many services, some of which are set out below.

Personal Counseling

Personal counselors are available to help you identify and accomplish your academic and career goals, enhance your personal development, meet life's challenges, and improve your interpersonal relationships. CAPS offers brief therapy sessions to individuals and couples who are matriculated students of San José State University.

You do not need to be in significant distress to seek counseling. Sometimes our beliefs or expectations of ourselves, or of counseling, results in a delay in seeking help until situations become serious. While no issue is too big or small, many students tell CAPS that they wish they had come to counseling sooner. Start the journey now and seek counseling earlier rather than later.

Educational Counseling

CAPS Educational Programs provides students success and life skills that promote academic success. Their program assists students in navigating the university by informing them of SJSU resources and policies and serving as a bridge to personal counseling to help students’ overall well-being. We work with students on an on-going basis to create tailored educational plans to meet their goals.

Groups

Groups are a great way for you to connect with peers, learn new skills and strategies, and grow, both emotionally and educationally!

CAPS offers numerous types of groups that get students interacting and connecting to help each other.

Groups are often the most effective way to

  • Gain support and encouragement from others;

  • Learn how you are perceived by others;

  • Gain specific skills to improve your life;

  • Develop relationship skills.

Ground rules, including confidentiality, are typically established with group members to help promote trust. For most benefit, consistent attendance is strongly encouraged. Read Debunking Myths about Group Therapy [pdf] to learn more about how group works.

Life Skills Workshops

CAPS workshops are designed to improve your academic and personal success at SJSU.

Workshops are a great way for students to connect with peers, learn new skills and strategies, and grow both emotionally and educationally! We offer an extensive variety of workshops around the most important issues and challenges that students face.
