As we look toward Olympic Spirit, it is easy to be captivated by the medals, the anthems, and the record-breaking moments. These events represent the pinnacle of athletic success, where the world gathers to celebrate excellence and show a respect for all cultures.
However, as a school community guided by the values of Courage and Resilience, it is important that we look past the bright lights and focus on what truly makes a champion.
We often talk about the "Iceberg Effect." In the Olympics, we see the gold medal, the tiny tip of the iceberg above the waterline. What we don't see is the massive foundation below the surface: the years of practice, the early mornings, the injuries, and the fatigue.
Our students are no different. When we see a student sitting in class, we are only seeing a snapshot in time. We don't always know the work, the anxiety, or the personal hurdles they cleared just to show up and give their best that day.
Success isn't a straight line. The Olympics teaches us about resilience, but it also shows us the reality of defeat. We see athletes who face hard moments on the world stage, where their mistakes are visible to everyone. That requires immense courage.
But there is a different kind of perseverance required for the days when we aren't at our best and we have to deal with it privately. Sometimes, struggling behind the scenes is harder than struggling in the spotlight. Whether a student’s challenge is a failed test or a quiet off-day where they just don't feel like themselves, we must remember to focus on progress over results and that we will not be at 100% every single day, and that's okay.
At our school, we define success as the work put in and the learning that happens along the way. We intentionally celebrate students who demonstrate high effort and the Seawolf spirit throughout the year. If we only focus on the result, we lose heart when we fail. If we focus on the growth, a bad day simply becomes a turning point toward the next opportunity.
Let’s encourage our students to have the courage to fail, the perseverance to keep going, and the wisdom to know that their iceberg is being built every single day even on the days they can’t see it themselves.
GO CANADA!

Our Grade 4/5 students recently put on a wonderful Lunar New Year play celebrating the story of the 12 year Chinese Zodiac cycle. Working alongside Mrs. Burkie and Student Council, students helped bring the story to life through acting, storytelling, and teamwork. Every student played an important role, from creating props to performing as animals or characters in the play. Students also collaborated with art teacher Ms. Martha to design and create their own costumes and masks. The class showed incredible bravery and confidence performing in front of other students, staff, and parents. A special thank you to Mrs. Burkie, Ms. Martha, and Student Council for their support and guidance in making this meaningful experience possible.
I didn’t think the snow would reach us this year ❄️ After such a mild winter, it was surprising not to see any snow at all. And then suddenly, we were gifted these beautiful snowy days.
The campus quickly filled with energy as students rushed outside to enjoy it. Snowball fights started right away, snowmen appeared across the field, and the excitement was everywhere. There is something special about fresh snow that brings such a strong sense of joy and togetherness.
We’re so grateful for this beautiful winter moment. Enjoy some of the pictures capturing the fun and magic of these days!
A special thank you to our amazing maintenance team for keeping our campus safe for students and staff. Shoveling snow is not easy work, and we truly appreciate everything you do!
A couple of weeks ago, St. John’s Academy attended the Second Annual Cowichan Youth Film Festival in Duncan.
Held at Duncan Cinemas, this community showcase celebrated student creativity, bold storytelling, and the power of young voices on screen. The festival is not a competition but a space for students to share films they have created over the past two years.
This year, three schools participated: QMS as the organizers, Shawnigan Lake School, and St. John’s Academy. Even with a small group of schools, the range of ideas, styles, and storytelling was impressive. The organizers hope that even more schools will join in the future as this event continues to grow.
It was especially inspiring to see an event like this organized by students. The festival was professional and welcoming, and the Q and A and informal meet and greet gave students a meaningful opportunity to connect and celebrate each other’s work.
We were proudly represented by Xinyi, Windy, Alan, and Rei, who did a wonderful job representing St. John’s Academy. We look forward to participating again next year with more students!
Albert, Polaris, and Kareem recently completed a short photography project where each student developed their own unique concept and created a cohesive mini-exhibition. All photographs were taken on campus, and each collection was designed to share a consistent mood and style within the student’s chosen theme.
Albert focused on light, exploring how it shapes mood, contrast, and atmosphere.
Polaris explored movement, capturing the energy and rhythm of basketball games in action.
Kareem concentrated on landscapes of our school, highlighting its character and beauty through thoughtful composition.
Each student took multiple photographs and carefully selected their two strongest pieces for the final exhibition. The featured photos are also displayed in the Den, and you are very welcome to stop by and see them in person!
Adam, Owen, and Markcus in the 4/5 class had an exciting weekend of hockey! Their Kerry Park U11D team took home gold in the A division at the JDF U11 Development Family Day Showcase. The final game was sealed with a 5 to 2 victory. Way to go boys!
Our annual trip to Whistler was a wonderful success and without a doubt a highlight of the year! We were lucky to have great weather, strong student participation, and that perfect crisp mountain air that makes everything feel extra refreshing. Many students took part in our tubing adventure, laughing their way down the slippery slopes, while a few brave individuals challenged themselves on skis or a snowboard alongside a mountain guide.
The fun didn’t stop there — students also experienced the magical forest night walk, Vallea Lumina, and of course, made full use of the always-popular heated outdoor pool. Whether relaxing, adventuring, or cheering each other on, the weekend was filled with connection, courage, and plenty of memorable moments.
When we returned from Whistler, we still had one more day of the long weekend to enjoy together. We gathered on campus to celebrate Lunar New Year with hot pot and games in the Den — the perfect way to wrap up an already special weekend with warmth, laughter, and community.
It was truly a fantastic few days in boarding — and hard to believe that March Break is only three weeks away!

Join the SJA Push-up Team!
From the 5th - 27th of February there will be a daily push-up target; these daily targets will add up to 2000 push-ups! This is in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association and Mental Health Week. We are raising funds and starting the conversation around mental health! If push-ups are not your thing, then you can do sit-ups instead. If you go to the link below, you can create an account and join the SJA push-up team. The SJA push-up team will come together once or twice a day to support each other in doing a batch of push-ups or sit-ups, either in the den or in the gym. We have a fundraising target, but if that isn't your thing, then you can join just to be physically active and support others. Students, staff and parents are welcome.

Pink Shirt Day is an important opportunity for our school community to come together and stand up against bullying. By wearing pink, we show our commitment to kindness, inclusion, and respect for one another.
Our Pink Shirt Day School Store is open for those who would like to participate by ordering a printed pink shirt to wear on the day. All orders will be delivered to the school before the event.
Happy Family Day Weekend!
We hope everyone was able to access the White Hatter presentation and found this an important and informative event, thank you for attending.
Please be aware, PCEG's used uniform sales will be changing in some areas, effective March 1, 2026.
Uniforms will remain priced at roughly 50% of new, and all proceeds retained by the PCEG will continue to directly support extracurricular programming and student led initiatives.
If families have items on consignment, the portion of sales retained by the PCEG will increase to 50% of the total sale. This is more in line with other private school policies, and will ensure fair pricing and sustainability. We also greatly appreciate any donated items to sell. In the case of donations the PCEG will retain 100% of proceeds to directly benefit the student body as noted above. Thank you for your understanding. We are also looking for a volunteer or volunteers who would be willing to learn the system and help or lead this important project. Please reach out to us at sjaparentgroupshawnigan@gmail.com or through our Facebook group, SJA PARENT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT GROUP.
Ongoing fundraising opportunities include Country Grocer Receipts. This is an easy way to contribute to our fundraising efforts, just bring in your Country Grocer receipts and place them in the envelope in the office. Did you know we have an Island Return it account? Just drop your bottles to Island Return It on Fisher Road across from the main Depot (remember to specify you are donating to St John's Academy Shawnigan Lake).
We welcome any new ideas at our monthly meetings; however, you are also invited to email us anytime at sjaparentgroupshawnigan@gmail.com.
Have a great long weekend.
