September 05
The first week of school is always a whirlwind for staff and students. The freedom and whimsy of the summer have been rudely interrupted by the structure and routines of a school week. The adjustment period can be exhausting.
Although I'm certain that many students returned home after school this week with sagging shoulders and a dragging backpack, the mood around the school has been positive, upbeat, and energetic. Friendships have been rekindled, new connections made, and slowly but surely the habits of successful students are being rediscovered.
Last week, I wrote about our three Seawolf themes that we want our students to live daily: EXPLORER, LEADER, PACK.
To focus on one of those today, I have seen the Seawolf Pack on full display this week. In fact, as I type this, I look out to our dock to see students energetically jumping in the lake, enjoying a warm September day and relishing in, what may be, one of the final hot days of the season. These moments are what bond us to our Pack and create those connections with others who share a common interest.
In my opening address to the students this year, I spoke of the simple ways that we can strengthen our Pack. Acknowledging each other as we pass with a "Hello" or "Good morning!" is an easy way to make others feel included and welcome. The goal is not just to greet our friends and classmates, but those who we may not know (yet). Greet and recognize our housekeepers who get the school ready for our arrival in the morning. Say hello to our maintenance staff who make sure everything runs smoothly around our campus. The more we notice others, the more we feel like we're all part of the same Pack.
The first week can be a lot. New routines. New people. An overload of information. The return of homework.
But I can see already the changes that come with a caring environment. Students who were anxious on the first day are now running around playing tag at lunch with new friends. Those who barely said a word for a few days are slowly coming out of their shell and participating in class.
If we all take ownership of the Pack mentality, we can ensure that everyone feels included and supported as Seawolves.

Tower challenge
In their first class, the Grade 6 science students took on a tower challenge. They were given just two sheets of paper, four paper clips, two small binder clips, and a single strip of masking tape.
With only twenty minutes to build a freestanding paper tower, the students worked in pairs and impressed with their creativity. They tested out a variety of ideas (some successful, others not), which perfectly reflected the spirit of the scientific process.
Congratulations to Karolina Rose for being courageous and submitting her work to the Bondar Challenge!
Her excellent photograph and thoughtful artist statement earned her a winning spot in the age 11–14 category.
Shout-out to everyone who joined in! Your creativity and courage made this challenge inspiring!

Please find the tryouts interest sign-up form for Grades 8-12 below. This year, we will also allow some Grade 7 students to attend tryouts, and depending on team offerings, they may or may not have the option to play. For some teams, not all who try out will make the team. For other teams, all students who participate will be eligible to come out.
Term 1 - Volleyball Tryouts started this week. Here are the next two weeks' dates and times:
This is a list of sports that have been offered at some point over the past few years. The number of interested students will determine if there will be enough to offer each team this year. Below is the list. Please add your grade to all the sports that you are interested in playing (remember, these are competitive teams)

Grade 4-7 Athletic Jamboree information will be sent to parents and communicated to students in early September.
We are very pleased to share with you that this week marked the start of a fantastic new academic year! Our boarding students have been settling into their new routines wonderfully, demonstrating great enthusiasm and independence. Despite the busy school days, the students have been transitioning from summer-mode to school mode, still finding time to enjoy themselves in the evenings, especially with lots of outdoor volleyball games that brought everyone together for some fun and friendly competition.
Over our first weekend on campus, we took advantage of the beautiful waterfront, engaging in canoeing and fishing activities that allowed students to relax and connect with nature. A few brave students even took the plunge and went swimming, making the most of the warm weather and fun water activities. A quick shout-out to one of our new dorm parents, Mr. Steven, who has continued to share his love of the lake with our students each day. We hope to continue to take advantage of our beautiful lake location for a few more weeks before the colder season comes!
We did leave campus last Saturday to visit the newly opened "H-Mart" in Victoria, an Asian supermarket, giving students the opportunity to explore and search for a taste of home.
It’s been a wonderful start to the year, and we look forward to more exciting adventures and meaningful moments in the weeks to come.
