This week our community came together for a Truth and Reconciliation ceremony led by our Grade 10 students. Standing in front of the whole school to share words of reflection took courage, and it connected directly to our theme of the Explorer. Some of our students are new to the school and are still developing their English, yet they chose to take the risk of speaking, supported by their classmates. Their example reminds us that exploration is not only about new places, but also about stepping forward in moments that matter.
Truth and Reconciliation is one of those moments. This day is important for Indigenous people and for all Canadians. The Calls to Action challenge us to learn, to listen, and to take steps toward building better relationships. Our students demonstrated that meaningful action often begins with small but brave choices, like standing up to speak and ensuring every voice is heard.
We also hosted six international education agents from across the United States today. They visited several boarding schools on Vancouver Island and left with a strong impression of ours. Some of our students served as ambassadors, taking time to talk with the visitors, answer their questions, and share their experiences. The agents noted the maturity, impressive goals, and clear sense of the value of learning that our students expressed.
The agents’ message was clear: some schools may have impressive buildings, but what truly matters is what takes place inside them. They were impressed by our school's focus on inclusion, belonging, progressive approach to education, and committed to meaningful learning through the IB framework. To be able to convey all these elements of our school in just a few short hours is a testament to the work of our teachers and students in the classrooms to establish such a welcoming and supportive environment.

Start of Truth and Reconciliation assembly: "The idea that Truth and Reconciliation is not just history, Truth and Reconciliation is an active process that we all are active participants in, not just on September 30th but every single day that we learn, live and play on these lands. I hope that you can better understand that there is so much more to the topic of Truth and Reconciliation than something as simple as a land acknowledgment or an orange shirt."

Delta, Gribbell, Tzouhalem, and Arbutus brought incredible energy to the Volleyball Interhouse competition! The Wolfpack spirit was alive on the court, with cheers, laughter, and moments of intense focus throughout the games. It was fantastic to see everyone giving their best and wearing their house colours with pride.
Congratulations to Gribbell for taking first place in the competition! Arbutus claimed a strong second, followed by Tzouhalem in third and Delta in fourth. A special shout-out to Arbutus for their amazing energy and team spirit, earning them extra spirit points!

Well done, SJASL, for making the event memorable and full of spirit!
On Wednesday, the Grade 4/5 class went on a hike up to the halfway point overlook on Baldy Mountain.
As always, the views of the lake and surrounding hills were worth the beads of sweat and tired legs.

The Student Council is in the midst of planning our 2nd annual “SJASL Haunted House” the week before Halloween. In preparation, they require LOTS of cardboard! If you have recently purchased a large appliance and/or have large, sturdy boxes/sheets of cardboard, please consider donating them to the Council. They can be brought and dropped off in the Boardroom. The more, the better!!!
Hello and Happy October from Dorms! Last weekend, our boarding students had an unforgettable adventure on the water as we headed out whale watching on Saturday! The trip did not disappoint. We were lucky enough to spot both humpback whales and orcas! Students loved the chance to be out on the boat, taking in the fresh sea air and experiencing Vancouver Island’s incredible wildlife up close. Afterward, we spent the evening in downtown Victoria, where students had the freedom to explore in small groups and choose their own spot for dinner. It was a day full of excitement, exploration, and great memories.
Looking ahead, October is shaping up to be full of more excitement and more warmth - we only hope the weather cooperates! We have bowling and ziplining on the calendar, along with our much-loved annual trip to the pumpkin patch and corn maze. Of course, we’ll also be celebrating Halloween with plenty of festive activities in the dorms, including events on campus that are open to the bigger SJA community - keep an eye out for more updates to come in here and in student council updates…It’s sure to be a month full of fun, adventure, and seasonal traditions!
