October 17
Our school works best when it operates as a partnership between families and educators. We share the same goal: to help students grow into leaders, explorers, and members of a caring community pack. Parents are an essential part of that Seawolf Pack, and one of my goals this year is to strengthen the ways we connect and engage with one another.
The most effective way to be involved is through our Parent Community Engagement Group (PCEG), which meets monthly. The executive committee is now in place, and we always welcome more parents to join the conversation. These meetings provide space for sharing ideas, giving input, and helping shape our school experience for all families. I encourage you to set aside just one hour each month to attend either in person or online. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, October 21 at 6:00pm in the boardroom, with a Google Meet link provided below for virtual participation. It may sound cliché, but many hands truly make light work. The more engagement we have, the more progress we can make together.
Following the PCEG meeting, we will host the first of our monthly parent workshop seminars. On Tuesday evening, Tonya Kilmer, an SJA parent and occupational therapist, will present “Understanding Your Brain and Body Better for Improved Focus and Learning” in the Den and virtually on Google Meet. This session will include practical strategies for how parents and teachers can support students’ focus and self-regulation at home and at school.
Looking ahead, on November 4, we will hold another session titled “Success at SJA.” This workshop will focus on understanding learning within the IB framework, helping parents support students with their assignments, and explaining how to interpret the upcoming progress reports and IB grading scale, which differ from traditional BC grades.
In the new year, we plan to host an additional session on technology use, including how to guide children in managing social media, online safety, and digital balance - topics that are increasingly important for student wellbeing.
All of these initiatives depend on active parent participation. Our hope is to create a welcoming environment where families feel connected, informed, and part of a shared vision for student success. When we engage together, we strengthen the bonds that make our community thrive, because every member of the Pack matters.

This week, our students enjoyed an engaging visit from Tonya Kilmer of IMPACT Occupational Therapy. With her fun, hands-on approach, Tonya got everyone moving and thinking about how our brains and bodies work together to support learning and focus. She shared practical ways to make learning easier and more enjoyable for all.
Tonya is a Veteran Medic, soccer coach, and passionate therapist who helps people regain confidence and independence through outdoor-based therapy.
Families are invited to join us for the Parent & Community Presentation with Tonya Kilmer on Tuesday, October 21, from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. This inspiring session will explore simple ways to boost focus, learning, and wellbeing.
In this week's highlight, we discover the inner workings of the Cooking CCA. This club is run on Thursdays and the students are supported by Ms. Martha while cooking. We had the opportunity to interview two students who find cooking thoroughly inspiring and fun.
One of the students we interviewed was Jackson. We asked him if he thinks cooking CCA has helped him improve, and he said, “Cooking CCA has helped my skills and the techniques I use.” This cooking CCA can help shape someone's skills for baking in a very critical and creative way!

Meet Mr. Damon: The ELL Teacher at SJA
A Tzouhalem Educator Who Says His Students Are the Best Part of SJA
At SJA, Mr. Damon of Tzouhalem House has become a key figure in our international student community. For the past two and a half years, he has served as an ELL (English Language Learner) teacher—a role he considers his most important at the school.
More than just a language instructor, Mr. Damon builds cultural connections through his own love of reading, travel, and the natural world. He often brings global perspectives into the classroom, making lessons lively and meaningful. When asked what he enjoys most about SJA, he replied without hesitation: his students. He is inspired daily by their hard work and unique backgrounds.
Outside of teaching, Mr. Damon enjoys exploring different foods—especially yakiniku, a flavorful Japanese barbecue. This passion for international cuisine reflects his teaching philosophy: creating an inclusive space where every culture is valued.
In just a short time, Mr. Damon has made a lasting impact. He is not only a teacher but also a mentor and friend, helping international students feel supported and connected at SJA.

SIGNATURE DESIGN
In this short design project, students designed their own personal signature that is both meaningful and professional. Many people graduate without developing a confident or polished signature, so this activity encouraged students to create one that truly represents their identity and can be proudly used in real-life situations such as signing a passport, driver’s license, job contract, or artwork. Students took the work seriously and did amazing work!
Students in Grade 11 Chemistry performed their first big lab of the Diploma Programme. Groups synthesized aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) from solid salicylic acid and aqueous acetic anhydride. After filtering the synthesized aspirin, they purified it by dissolving in ethanol and then recrystallizing it in an ice bath. The purified aspirin product was filtered using vacuum filtration and weighed to see the resultant yield.
On Tuesday, five members of the SJA XC running team attended a meet at Glenora Trail Head, Duncan. It was such a gorgeous afternoon! Alice Boyle, Winter Lutner and Marlowe Race raced in the Grade 8 Girls category, with Paige, Marlow and Alice taking 3rd, 4th and 5th places respectively. Olivia Colaca raced in the Senior Girls category and placed 8th. Ms. Parsons two dogs, Pip and Scout, were chief mascots for the school!
HOW TALL IS A TREE
Last week, our Grade 9 math students took their learning outdoors to explore how similar triangles can be used to measure real-world objects. Working in small groups, students collaborated to estimate the heights of trees around the school using measuring tapes and proportional reasoning. This hands-on activity not only strengthened their understanding of geometry but also supported the development of collaboration skills, as students shared ideas, divided tasks, and compared results to ensure accuracy—all while discovering how math connects to the world around them.
SOCCER JAMBOREE
On Thursday, a group of Grade 6 and 7 boys represented our school at a local soccer jamboree in Duncan. The event focused on fun, competitive games against other local schools. For many players, it was also a chance to build their skills and confidence in the sport.
The Seawolves played hard and represented our school with great effort and teamwork. With only one substitute and back-to-back games, the team was tired by the end of the afternoon but showed strong spirit throughout.
Grade 12 chemistry students are currently learning about acids and bases and the essential skill of titration to determine the concentration of an acid or base. The goal of the titration is to produce a very pale pink colour—signalling the endpoint when the indicator changes from clear to pink. Students approached this task very carefully, adding each drop of base slowly to ensure accurate addition of titrant.
Vitaly caught our first perch of the year, which he showed to the other members and returned to the lake. All-in-all, 2 perch and 5 sunfish were caught on our best day so far.
HAND OF MAN MUSEUM
The Grade 7 Class went to the Hand of Man Museum as part of our early civilizations unit. We were able to see Inuit, African and Indigenous artifacts, totems and other artistic cultural artifacts. The students were able to see a range of animals that would have been part of the food sources of these different groups of people. Furthermore, students were able to see skeletons of narwhals, hippos, crocodiles and many other interesting species. There was an amazing variety of exhibits, and the museum staff were very accommodating and helpful. Thank you to the Grade 7 students for attentiveness and participation during the field trip.
This past Thanksgiving long weekend was full of adventure, good food, and cozy moments in boarding!
Many of our students took the opportunity to spend the weekend in Vancouver, visiting friends and family and enjoying some well-deserved rest and delicious meals! For those who stayed on campus, the weekend was just as special…
On Saturday, a small but brave group of students headed out for a ziplining adventure—despite the rainy weather! Spirits were high, and everyone had a fantastic time soaring through the trees and conquering a few fears along the way. It was a true testament to our students’ courage and sense of fun.
On Monday, we celebrated Thanksgiving with a wonderful meal on campus planned by Chef Ron and his talented kitchen team. A few of our students even rolled up their sleeves to help with dessert, baking two pumpkin pies and an apple pie that were quickly enjoyed by all! To top it off, our dorm parents hosted a cozy campfire in the evening, where students gathered to chat, laugh, and enjoy the warmth of the fire together. It was the perfect blend of adventure and togetherness—a weekend to remember!
