Artificial Intelligence is not a new arrival; it has been quietly navigating us in Google Maps and correcting our grammar for years. However, the recent surge in Generative AI represents the most significant technological leap in a generation. It is similar to the introduction of the calculator or the internet in how it transforms learning.
As an IB school committed to excellence and innovation, our response is not to hide from this reality, but to master it.
Our IB philosophy is focused on inquiry. We teach students to ask questions, a skill that is more critical now than ever. AI encourages curiosity, but it requires a human to direct it. We view AI not as a replacement for human intelligence, but as a tool to support and expand our abilities.
The rise of AI forces us to ask a hard question: If an assignment can be easily completed by a computer, is it still worth assigning?
We are actively rethinking how we measure student learning. Research from institutions like Stanford and best practices from forward-thinking schools around the world suggest a shift away from "take-home" essays that prioritize a final product. Instead, we are moving toward:
Process-over-Product: Assessing the drafting, editing, and thinking phases, not just the final result.
Oral Assessments: Students must be able to verbally talk about their ideas and explain them in real-time.
In-Class Writing: We are reclaiming the value of paper and pencil. Developing strong writing skills requires the struggle of organizing thoughts without assistance.
We cannot prepare students for the future by banning the tools they will use in the workplace. Our school's AI policy is designed with flexibility to mirror professional environments. Teachers have the autonomy to permit AI use in tiers, depending on the learning goal:
No AI: For tasks requiring foundational skill building (e.g., in-class assignments).
Limited AI: For idea generation, planning, or organizing thoughts.
Open AI: For generating content or feedback, which students then critique and refine.
We are innovators, but we remain focused on fundamentals. Our goal is to graduate students who are technologically fluent but possess the skills AI cannot replicate: complex problem-solving, collaboration, social intelligence, and ethical leadership.
We are teaching your children to be the pilot, not the passenger.

Let’s come together and fill our canoe with non-perishable food to support the Food Bank. And here’s the best part: Nurse Heather will donate $1 for every pound of food collected! Let’s paddle together toward supporting our community — every item counts!
Grade 11 Physics students explored light and sound waves through a series of hands-on activities to launch their next unit. They investigated sound using tuning forks and boomwhackers, and examined key properties of light—including refraction, reflection, and diffraction. Students also made interdisciplinary connections by considering Theory of Knowledge questions such as, “Can we understand something without seeing it?” to link their learning to their TOK class. They ended the lesson on a festive note by playing a few Christmas carols together using the boomwhackers.
I was on my Friday break-time rounds when I came across a group of students being wonderfully silly and happily posing for the camera. I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos!
Enjoy!
Just days before The "Snowball" this Thursday the 11th! Kareem (Grade 6) snapped some great photos of our Student Council decorating for the Senior Winter Formal Dance! ❄️✨
A huge shout-out to our Grade 7 student athletes for their fantastic efforts on Thursday at the Independant Schools Volleyball Jamboree! We saw strong play, steady improvement all day long, and amazing positive attitudes. Thank you for showing what it means to be true Seawolves and wonderful ambassadors of our school.
GO Seawolves!
We also want give a huge shout-out to our Grade 5 and Grade 6 students who represented SJASL at the SD79 Basketball Jamboree on Friday! You played with awesome energy, showed great teamwork, and kept improving every single game. Your positive attitudes and kindness toward other teams made us all proud.
Thank you for being fantastic role models and showing everyone what it means to be a Seawolf, hard-working, encouraging, and always giving your best. Great job, Grade 5 and 6! Keep it up, Seawolves!
Keep your eyes open next week for details about the start of our re-enrollment process from January 12-31 for next year's registration.
Early registration helps us to plan accordingly for our staffing and program needs.
Beginning in February we will open enrollment to new families and host our next Information Night for prospective students on February 3rd.
We have a few sneak peaks coming next week regarding a new bus route to Langford and an alternative high school pathway for next year's Grade 11 students!

This past weekend was truly one for the books in our boarding program! We packed our bags and headed off to Vancouver, spending the night in Richmond for a whirlwind adventure filled with excitement, friendship, and holiday cheer.
Students spent Friday exploring the Vancouver Aquarium, discovering everything from jellyfish to sea otters, before enjoying some free time downtown to shop, snack, and soak up the city atmosphere. We wrapped up the evening with a late-night pool party at the hotel — a highlight filled with laughter, splashing, and plenty of memories.
On Saturday, students had more time to explore, this time at Richmond Centre, before making the journey back to Vancouver Island with full hearts (and full shopping bags!).
Back on campus, the holiday spirit has been absolutely everywhere this week. With twinkling lights, festive music, and happy energy in the air, we are heading into a wonderfully busy Christmas-themed weekend. Tonight is our big Dorm Holiday Party in the Den, where students will enjoy games, puzzles, music, snacks, and what will surely be a hilarious round of White Elephant. Tomorrow, students have the option to visit Butchart Gardens for their magical Christmas light display. And on Sunday, we’ll lace up our skates for our annual Ice Skating Night, complete with a cozy campfire and warm hot chocolates to end the evening.
As we wrap up these first incredible months of the school year, we want to share how grateful we are for the energy, kindness, and enthusiasm our boarding students bring to campus every single day. It has been an absolute joy getting to know them, learn with them, and laugh with them. We hope everyone enjoys a restful and happy holiday break with family, and we already look forward to welcoming our campus-family back in January for even more adventures together.
