As we look ahead to next week, our focus shifts inward as we celebrate Mental Health Week. Every month feels like a "busy time of the year" and we are taking steps to prioritize the well-being of our students and our staff. Thanks to Ms. Burkie for her leadership with this Student Council events and Nurse Heather for arranging the annual cold dip challenge (followed by a warm sauna!).
To keep spirits high and the stress low, we’re focusing on the "comfort" side of school. Next week, students are encouraged to wear casual clothing every day, and our kitchen will be serving up comfort food lunches to keep everyone nourished and happy.
Recently, I read Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation. It’s a compelling (and essential) read for any parent. Haidt draws a direct, evidence-based line between the rise of "phone-based childhoods" and the decline in youth mental health.
At SJASL, we are already implementing several of his recommendations to reclaim the "play-based childhood," including:
Free Play: Encouraging unstructured time to build social resilience.
Wilderness Wednesdays: Getting back to basics in the great outdoors for our Grade 4/5 class.
Outdoor Education: Specifically for our Grade 6–7 PE blocks.
However, we can’t do it alone. We’ve received concerning reports regarding tech use, often involving secret accounts or digital platforms that parents aren't aware of. To address this, we are still coordinating a visit from the RCMP to speak directly with students, and I will share those details as soon as they are finalized.
Tuesday, February 10 | 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
This is the big one. Our Parents Community Engagement Group (PCEG) has generously funded a live presentation by The White Hatter on Digital Literacy and Internet Safety for Parents. Students are welcome to attend, but the focus will be on strategies and information for parents. Click here to read about the presentation from the White Hatter website.
Now, I’m going to use the "M" word: Mandatory. (Okay, it’s actually "highly recommended," but let’s pretend it’s mandatory for the sake of our children’s digital safety!). This session is critical for all parents, especially those with students in Grades 4–9. Please try to have at least one parent attend. You have two ways to join us:
In-Person: Join us in the school library to watch the live virtual presentation on the big screen. The benefit? Afterward, we’ll host an in-person discussion to talk specifically about SJASL-related habits and how we can support each other as a community. Feel free to bring a friend! Quick RSVP here so we know numbers.
Online: If you can’t make it to campus, you can stream the live studio show from home.

Passcode: 7710
The online platform is fantastic for content and promises to be an engaging presentation, but the real magic happens when we talk to each other. By gathering in person, we can move past general advice and discuss the specific challenges we see in our hallways and your living rooms.
Let’s work together to ensure our students are as safe online as they are on our playground. I look forward to seeing a full house (or a very busy chat room) on Tuesday evening.

Come support our students and experience the amazing creativity of our school community. We can’t wait to see you there!
Starting in January, the hockey crew has been waking up extra early on Monday mornings to make it on the ice for 6:30am at Kerry Park. The goal is fun, although it can occasionally get a little competitive!
Students from Grades 4-9 participate in drills and games organized by Mr. Arscott to improve their hockey skills and wake their minds and bodies up before school.
Following the ice time, students return to the school on the bus for the much anticipated hot breakfast served by our kitchen team.
We have some talented players at SJASL and it's fun to see them in a different environment and building connections in new ways.
Bake-Off is back for the new year!! Over the past three weeks, students have enthusiastically taken on a series of new baking challenges. From banana bread to chocolate chip cookies, followed by carrot cake muffins and beautifully decorated cupcakes, the competition showcased not only impressive baking skills but also creativity, teamwork, school spirit, and a healthy sprinkle of chaos!!! This CCA brings students together in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, celebrating effort, enjoyment, and a shared love of baking.
Senior and Junior outdoor education groups joined forces and took on indoor rock climbing at the Hangout in Duncan. Students worked on building strength, confidence, and problem-solving skills in a fun, supportive setting. The experience encouraged teamwork, resilience, and smart risk-taking, and helped form connections among all ages of students at SJA. Great work!
Mr. Alex and Mr. Stephen.
The 6 SJASL Jr. Boys played a full 48 minutes to come back from 18-4 to push Shawnigan Lake to a score 35-42, losing only by 7 points. Zach, Cedar and Jack all scored 3-pointers to bring the team close, fast! It was a Herculean effort, and one for which the team should be proud.
This past week, our school has been host to 19 students visiting from Shanghai, China. These students are on a break from school for their Lunar New Year holiday and chose to spend their time exploring our school, Vancouver Island, and Vancouver.
They have participated in many activities including the Royal BC Museum, Cathedral Grove, swimming, Kinsol Trestle, and were even treated to a musical performance by our wind ensemble on Wednesday morning. They also enjoyed a few collaborative games and activities with our Grade 4-8 classes at some point this week.
Thanks to Mr. Damon who led the morning lessons and activities, the students will be returning home following their second week in Vancouver with increased confidence in their English skills.
Boarding has been full of simple joys and spring-like energy. Many of our students are still enjoying trips to H-Mart, our local Asian supermarket, where they love finding new snacks, ingredients, and comfort foods from home before making “weekend feasts” in our common room on campus. We’ve also recently visited downtown Victoria to see a short IMAX film and explore Chinatown (Did you know… Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest surviving in Canada?)
We’ve also been making the most of the beautiful warm weather on campus. If the Sunday weather is nice, Mr. Stephen will often set up a cozy campfire, and students gather to roast hotdogs, relax outdoors, and enjoy a laid-back afternoon together.
Behind the scenes, we’re still busy preparing for our upcoming annual Whistler trip, with excitement steadily building as students get registered, organized, and ready for a winter adventure in the mountains. There’s a wonderful mix of calm and anticipation in the air as we look ahead to another memorable boarding highlight.

Join the SJA Push-up Team!
From the 5th - 27th of February there will be a daily push-up target; these daily targets will add up to 2000 push-ups! This is in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association and Mental Health Week. We are raising funds and starting the conversation around mental health! If push-ups are not your thing, then you can do sit-ups instead. If you go to the link below, you can create an account and join the SJA push-up team. The SJA push-up team will come together once or twice a day to support each other in doing a batch of push-ups or sit-ups, either in the den or in the gym. We have a fundraising target, but if that isn't your thing, then you can join just to be physically active and support others. Students, staff and parents are welcome.
