Regatta de Zamboanga. A regatta is a series of boat races. The term typically describes racing events of rowed or sailed water craft. This is one of the most awaited events in the festivity wherein colorful Vintas of Zamboanga are racing to win the title. The vinta (locally known as lepa-lepa or sakayan) is a traditional boat found near the Philippine island of Mindanao. The boats are made by Samals, Badjaos and Moros from the Archipelago of Sulu, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Southern Mindanao. What makes it distinct is its sail which is made of assorted colors vertically lined up. It is said to represent the colorful culture, history, and heritage of the Muslim community.
In this annual event, spectators from the other countries are expecting to gather along the Cawa-cawa Boulevard (now RT Lim Boulevard). It is where the activity is annually held. Last year's event was themed “Regatta de Esperanza (Boats of Hope)”. This activity was conceptualized by the officers during the Zamboanga crisis and their aim is to help bring hope again to the victims and rebuild the comeliness of the city after the siege.
Lucky for those people who witnessed the racing of more than 100 colorful and magical Vintas which is paddled by two males and which gives a dash of color to the shorelines of Paseo Del Mar.
Although regattas are typically amateur competitions, they are usually formally structured events, with comprehensive rules describing the schedule and procedures of the event. Regattas may be organized as championships for a particular area or type of boat, but are often held just for the joy of competition, camaraderie, and general promotion of the sport.
