1 If someone helps, help them back, even if it takes forever
If you stayed with a group until midnight and you got that armor you were looking
for, be there every night until all your group members are taken care of if at all
possible. When you can't be there let everyone know (by mail in Warhammer).
This code of conduct was established fairly deeply by the heavy PvE content
games like the early EQ.
Clear times with your family and make up for it. I'm not kidding. Do the dishes,
take out the trash, take care of the kitty litter box, spend lots of quality time with
your own kiddies when they are supposed to be doing their homework. Oh and
ice cream, that works too.
The exception, of course, is that if by doing so you are taking the spot of someone
with the skill to replace you that wants to be there for the goodies, then by all means,
duck out that night. But make clear your availability for those that fought with you to
get yours. Don't sit around and hope you are forgotten ... talk to those that helped
you privately and let them know that with warning you'll help if at all possible.
There's a limit to this for some places and circumstances, of course, use your
common sense.
2 Stick to Legit Behavior
So you found a cheat that gets you where you shouldn't be? If you are lucky you
will be slapped with a 3 day suspension in Warhammer and be noted as someone
who does such things. In many games, some behavior is met by instant banning.
The same can happen to you in Warhammer for serious illegit or behavior issues.
Don't trust other players' assessments of what will get you banned, stick to legit
behavior.
Kinda sad if you think about it, to be determined not to have the character to play
your character.
3 How much Role-Playing is just right?
Amongst the masses, even on a role-playing server, you will find there are limits to
this. However, while the normal response is to give up altogether in the face of so
few role-playing, I have found, however, that this is unnecessary and people for the
most part appreciate "modified" role-playing, and your efforts can help others come
out of their role-playing shell.
Hmm, so what do I mean by modified role-playing? That's a mix of role-playing
without going so far in-character that people think you are an alien.
For example, stay away from:
- Repetitive cliche's like "aaaarr!". Pirate's Day just doesn't translate well here.
- Going so far in-character as to say things like, "what is a kitchen sink, I have
no idea what you are talking about".
- Roleplaying obscene criminal activity. If yeh got to make reference to doing
something that in the real world you would go to jail for and in every way be
reviled by most everyone in society, especially if women or children are involved,
just shut-up. Find a guild populated mostly with 14 year olds and every year
move to one whose population is a year younger.
Here are some recommendations:
- When doing events that folks ask you to go into vent (ventrillo) for, play hearing
only, no microphone. I've never had difficulty doing so as I'm usually the one
taking, not giving, orders. This allows you to retain some semblance of roleplayin'
as yer character.
- Try to word ooc (out-of-character) questions using role-playing whenever possible,
and even better try to minimize ooc conversations when possible.
- When engaging in ooc chat (preferable involving small numbers or just one person),
preface your ooc question with something like, "do you have time for an ooc
question?", or say, "do you have time for a question about keeps?", or something
to that effect.
