Woodlands Bowling

7 August 2019

A merry band of Woodlanders swapped their bats for bowls this morning at the Maltravers Bowling Centre of Excellence. About 14 members braved the elements to roll their woods organised by club president, Dave Richardson. There are too numerous other people to thank but we were made very welcome by the bowls club. There were many styles of bowling from the Barnes Wallis approach to the whirlwind wang but above all we had a very amicable morning.

There is an opportunity to repeat this experience in exactly 2 weeks time, same time same location.

Guide Dogs Fund Raising

3 July 2019

During the course of 2018/19 the good people of Woodlands Table Tennis Club sponsored the Guide Dogs charity, raising £826, which will be boosted to over £920 with the addition of Gift Aid. This is an absolutely splendid sum.

Paul Prior presented our cheque to the local Guide Dogs representatives, Ken & Yvonne, on Friday at Littlehampton. Ken & Yvonne brought their current trainee dog, Tracey, to the presentation. Tracey, a lively and beautiful young black Labrador was still in the early stages of learning commands and clearly has a long way to go before she will be able to carry out her eventual role, but she is expected to make the grade and will one day be matched with a blind owner.

Yvonne talked about her role in teaching young dogs basic commands and introducing them to different sights, sounds and situations. She also mentioned the new danger that silent electric cars bring to the blind and their dogs, something the Guide Dogs charity has lobbied the car manufacturers and Government about.

It was a very informative evening which raised our awareness of the difficulties faced by being blind, and the difficulties faced by the charity in raising funds in order to provide, train and maintain these magnificent working dogs. The charity gets no Government funding whatsoever, and the process from start to finish is hugely expensive. Yvonne thanked us all on behalf of the charity and after the talk we were permitted to stroke and make a fuss of Tracey, all part of her on-going training.

Very well done everybody and thank you for supporting our 2018/19 charity.
