2015 CLUB COMPETITIONS

Jim Holden Trophy, September 1st 2015

Once again we had 24 members taking part in this fun competition, in memory of Jim Holden, a former secretary of our club & chairman of the Worthing & District league for many years. We had 4 tables of 6 players, playing as a round robin with the winners of each table playing in semi finals then on to the final. It was the best of 3 sets with the first to 11 points the winner & the best of 5 sets in the final.

This year as always our chairman put the fun element into the event, with the players having to play with very small bats & just to make it a little more fun, play with their opposite hand.

Lawrie Fountain, Andy Hunt, Chris Baker & Kris Pokorowski were the winners of their respective tables.

Lawrie played a brilliant game against Kris in the first semi final, with some brilliant rallies & great to watch with the eventual winner being Kris. Chris played Andy in the 2nd semi final, which was really very hard fought with the winner being Andy.

So the final between Kris & Andy was played, the best of 5 sets & although some great rallies, the worthy winner was Andy Hunt.

Congratulations to Andy as he has won both this & the Rose Harber trophy this year.

Again this event proved to be really enjoyable by all that took part & served as a great fun way to remember our dear friend Jim.

Open Singles Club Competition, Tuesday 7th April

At the WOODLANDS OPEN SINGLES there were two very good semi finals with the first being between Ken Trill and Chris Baker. Ken won the first set but Chris came through to win the next two & go into the final.

The second semi was between Laurie Fountain and Dave Richardson. Laurie won the first & Dave won the second. Laurie won the third 11-9 to go into the final which was the best of 5 sets, Chris Baker was too good for Laurie Fountain & won 3-0.

Littlehampton Handicap Singles Competition, Friday 10th April

The LA Handicap singles produced some incredible matches. First semi final was between Phil Keene & Dave Wicks with Phil going through to the final. The second semi was between Kris Pokorowski & Ken Trill & after a brilliant game Ken went through to the final. The final was won by Ken Trill who had had to give so many points to other players through the competition but was the very worthy winner.

Handicap Singles Competition, Tuesday 14th April

On this night at WOODLANDS was held both the Handicap singles & the Drawn Doubles. What an evening of TT. The Drawn Doubles had some super pairing & when you looked you could imagine many of them being the winners. The eventual runners up were Anne Rozario & Dave Wicks with the winners being Joanne Hanson & Chris Barrett.

The singles event was played as a straight knock out competition over sets of four games. Several results were very close & only won by the half point taken instead of serving first. The final was between Anne Rozario & Ken Trill, again, like the competition at LA with Ken Trill having to give so many points away.

This time though the winner was Anne Rozario. She had played so well all evening & again it was good to see that the ladies had an equal presence in both of the finals of the competitions.

Dennis Rhodes Drawn Doubles Trophy, Friday 17th April:

On Friday 17th at Littlehampton 20 players entered the Dennis Rhodes Drawn Doubles Trophy Competition. The top handicap player was put with the bottom & so on which made for some great pairing. We had two tables of 5 pairs & it was played as a round robin, best of 3 games. What great games we saw with many going to the third game.

The semi finals were created by the top couple of one table playing the runners up of the other table.

The winners of table one were Anne Greenard & Dave Wicks & the runners up were Kris Pokorowski & Les Nichols. The winners of table two were Valerie Bacon & Paul Prior & the runners up on count back were Barbara Bayford & Mervyn Hilton.

The first semi final was Anne & David versus Valerie & Paul. The second was Barbara & Mervyn versus Kris & Les.

The final was the best of 5 games with Anne & David versus Kris & Les. We were treated to a superb game. Anne & Dave going two games to love up & an 8-1 lead in the third when Kris & Les mounted what was to become the most amazing come back. Winning the third, then fourth & finally the fifth to win the trophy.

It is always good to see Dennis who at 93 still comes to most of our evenings & fittingly he was there for his event. Another wonderful night organised by Nikki & George who we thanked with some small gifts.

Rose Harber Memorial Trophy for Social Members, Tuesday 21st April

The Rose Harber Memorial Trophy tournament went very well, with fifteen players taking part, which is the most for several years. There were 3 tables of 5 players so everyone got at least 4 games. Each game had 4 sets played first to 11 points. This time the player that was receiving the points started the game with that handicap rather than add it to the end as we normally do. Handicapping was difficult as there was no history of the players, as when playing in the league and players have a handicap number to go by.

There were some brilliant games & much fun & laughter, played in a good spirit, as Rose would have loved.

The winners from each of the 3 tables plus the highest loser made up the semi finals. The winner of table 1 was Vernon Herrett; table 2 was Andy Hunt and table 3 was Andrew Cunningham. The best loser was the one that lost the least points but had won 3 games, Colin Smale 144.5 points, Pauline Skilton 144 points & Malcolm Miles 143 points, with Malcolm qualifying for the semi-finals.

Andy Hunt played Malcolm Miles with Andy winning through to the final: The other semi final was between Vernon Herrett & Andrew Cunningham with Vernon going through to the final.

Andy was given a 2 start for each set and came out the eventual winner after a very tight match with some very good rallies and coping with Vernon’s very awkward services. We are sure we will be seeing a lot more of Andy as he would like to play in the league next season.

The evening was made very special as Rose’s husband Dave Harber came along to present the trophies to the contestants & give a lovely bottle of Rose to both of them. A very good evening, with everyone enjoying themselves.

Dave Harber, Andy Hunt and Dave Richardson

Social Members Drawn Doubles

From the previous week when we had the Rose Harber Handicap singles event, we took away the handicaps from their results to give us the positions from top to bottom of those that were going to play. We had 16 players take part & took the top player to play with the bottom player & so on & played in 2 groups of 4, playing the best of 3 games. This made for some very close matches indeed with many going to the third game. The whole evening was played in such a sporting atmosphere.

The winners of group 1 were Mary Doyle & Vernon Herrett. The winners of group 2 were Pauline Skilton & David Macmillan so we had our finalist.

The winners, who played extremely well, were Mary & Vernon in a very close contest.

Comments from those that took part, many for the first time playing in competitions, said how much they had enjoyed themselves & hoped we would be doing it again next year.

2014 CLUB COMPETITIONS

Jim Holden Memorial Trophy, August 5th 2014.

Once again 24 club members took part in this now very popular club tournament, held in memory of our late secretary Jim Holden.

There is always a twist with this competition & this year there was no exception as our chairman David Richardson told the participants they were to play with their normal playing hand but with the hard bat they had used so well last year however this year they were to play pen holder grip. Then the bombshell that they had to use a very large table tennis ball. You should have seen their faces.

It was all taken in good spirit & it was obvious the amount of fun that was being had by the laughter heard throughout the evening. With the four round robins of 6 players per table it gave everyone at least 5 matches. Best of 3 games first player to 11 points.

The semi finals were between Jon Roberts & Geoff Wycherley and Chris Newberry & Barry Fillery.=Again it was good to see so many members stay till the end to support the players in the semi finals & the final. The final was between Geoff & Chris & although there were some very good rallies Geoff came out the worthy winner 3 sets to nil.

Jim would have loved all the fun of the evening & again we remembered our great friend.

6th May: Woodlands Singles

This annual tournament had a full compliment of 24 players, 4 groups of 6 playing in a round robin, best of 3 sets, first to 11 points. So much fantastic table tennis & all played in such good spirit, a lot of banter& laughter. So pleasing 16 players stay till the end to support the players & to help put equipment away.

The semi finals were between Craig Burgess & Chris Baker which Chris won 2-0, then between Phil Aylward & Ken Trill which Ken won 2-0.

The final was played between Ken Trill and Chris Baker to the best of 5 sets & won by Chris Baker 3-0 with some brilliant rallies.

The trophies were presented by our vice president Bruce Theurer.

9th May: Littlehampton Handicap Sngles

The LA Handicap Singles Tournament held on May 9th 2014 was a huge success. Very well organised by Nikki & George, putting many hours into making this a really great night.

There were 3 tables of 5 players played as a round robin so everyone had 4 games, each game played 4 sets, first to 11 & each player given handicap numbers from their league positions.

There were some great games & it was fantastic to see some of their faces when they found they had won when adding the handicap to their scores.

The first semi final was between Joanne Hanson & Barbara Bayford, the second between Tony Gallagher & Kris Pokorowski. The winners were Barbara & Kris who went through to the final which was again played over 4 sets. They both had the same handicaps & it was 2-2 at the end of the match so it was on count back of points won with Barbara winning 36-33.

A fantastic night had by all.

May 13th

The Club handicap singles at Woodlands - where the handicaps were so close throughout the evening -

resulted in Barbara Bayford winning against Ian Burgess in what was a close fought battle.

The Drawn doubles tournament was also fiercely fought and resulted in

Barbara Bayford and Spencer Wells triumphing against Ian Burgess and Joanne Hanson.

This is certainly Barbara’s year after winning the handicap singles at LA the week before.

Well done Barbara.

Thanks were given to Bob & Jenny Mansell for running the competitions at Woodlands this wespecially as Bob is standing down at the AGM & we will have to find someone else to organise the events.
