Note from past Punta Arenas campaign (2011)
Instructions and Tips - Punta Arenas
Getting to the ground station
always have orange vest on
3 ways -
1. out the door by the plane, walk around ramp and to the armada building
2. out the main terminal door, hard right by construction, through the white
gate if open (at night you can look out the window and see if this gate is open
3. across the parking lot, to the main entrance of the armada building if
black gate is open, then across armada ramp.
Opening door to ground station:
The door only locks from the inside. It will be locked a lot of times if the wind is
strong, in the morning there may be someone in the armada tower that can let you in,
wave and point at the door, they know. At night if its locked, walk around back of
the armada building, past the satellite dish to glass windows on the left, this is
where they hang out, knock on the windows. they will come open the door.
To shut the door we use a piece of duct tape, hold the skinniest edge of the duck tape
square and wedge it in the door as you pull it closed, this will wedge the door closed
but allow you to open it back again later.
Ground station morning
Walk out, grab measuring stick, check 3 antenna heights, come back in switch to
.5seconds on linlogger and push both javad record buttons. they are both set at 10 hz
now (400meg files). Thats it, head back.
Ground station night - remember your flashlight!
get door open, stop data on javads, plug in usb stick (can cause cpu to lockup)
Switch data to 30 seconds on linlogger. FTP to the first javad, ls, bin, get
filename. while its downloading get your measuring stick and go measure antenna.
come back wait for file to finish, when done, exit ftp and telnet 10.1.1.190 8002 to
the same javad, list, then remove, yesterdaysfile then click the x on the telnet
window to exit. Unplug the network cable from the first javad, WAIT UNTIL THE
DISCONNECT WINDOW GOS AWAY, then plug into the next javad. ftp 10.1.1.190, ls, bin,
get filename. While that file is downloading find the first file you downloaded and
copy it to the usb stick. wait for both processes to finish. when the download is
done, exit ftp and telnet to the javad and remove yesterdaysfile. now go in and
select the other javad file and the 2 linlogger files (low rate night b4 and todays
high rate) and copy these to the usb drive. when usb drive has all files, select all
the data (EXCEPT THE LOW RATE LINLOGGER FILE CURRENTLY LOGGING) in the home folder and
cut and paste it to DATA\OIBfall2011 folder, unmount the usb drive and your done!
Come back to the terminal, give usb to john and go back to the hotel and do it all
over again tomorrow.
For food, you can order a lunch with patricio for 4000 pesos the night before (2
sandwiches, they are ok but not great) you can also go to the terminal building and
order lunch, "para llevar" (para yayvar) means get it to go and its faster, or you can
sit down and eat, they do have wireless internet there but all the ports are blocked
(xchat). I recommend the "Diplomatico" sandwich. BTW all sandwiches are the size of
dinner plates and eaten with a fork (bcuz they are so big!) You can also go to the
grocery store and get microwave food and just eat in the office. Enjoy the internet
at the airport becuase it hardly works at the hotel.
Terminal internet password in our room "Bloke7]Owned"
Hotel internet password "gerenciahotel"
In strong winds you can check the antenna by walking straight out of the terminal door
and directly to the back of the parking lot, you can look over and see it from that
point.
Austral Lager is the best beer at the hotel
