Dr Prathap C Reddy- an M.D, MBBS, FCCP, FICA, and FRCS, is a cardiologist and entrepreneur who founded the first corporate chain of hospitals in India – the Apollo Hospitals Group. He revolutionized the health care scenario of India and inspired others to follow suit. Today, India has over 750 corporate hospitals all over the country.Dr Prathap C Reddy received his medical degree from the Stanley Medical College in Chennai and later trained as a cardiologist in the UK and USA. He did his fellowship from the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and went on to head several research programs at the Missouri State Chest Hospital, USA where he worked for several years before returning to India in 1978.

Dr. Pratap Reddy came to India after serving as the Chief Resident of the Worcenter City Hospital in the US to start his practice in Madras with a modest earning of Rs 100/- per day. The idea to establish Apollo Group of Hospitals came when Dr. Reddy lost a patient who couldn't make it to Texas for an open heart surgery. This inspired Dr. Pratap Reddy to create world-class medical infrastructure in India and make it more accessible and affordable to common people.
APOLLO HOSPITALSApollo Hospitals is an Indian hospital chain based in Chennai, India. It was founded by Dr Prathap C. Reddy in 1983 and has hospitals in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ghana, Nigeria, Mauritius, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait[citation needed]. Several of the group's hospitals have been among the first in India to receive international healthcare accreditation by America-based Joint Commission International (JCI).
The group has developed services in telemedicine, after starting a pilot project in 2000 in Pratap Reddy's home village. It is now the largest telemedicine provider in India with 71 centers.
Today, the Apollo Hospitals Group has over 22 centers in major cities in India and a combined turnover of over US $ 100 million. Dr Reddy is now spreading Apollo Hospitals Group to other parts of Asia. The group opened its first clinic in Dubai in March 1999 and is coming up with projects in Sri Lanka, Africa, Bangladesh, and Oman. Dr. Reddy is currently looking at secondary health centers in semi urban and smaller cities and has already identified 23 sites for the purpose. Dr. Pratap Reddy's latest initiatives are "Med Varsity"-a virtual medical university providing total access to experts in the field of medicine anywhere in the world- and "MEDNET" - Hospital Systems Management package. Both the initiatives are expected to transform health care sector in India.

Dr Prathap C Reddy was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his contribution to the emergence of the private healthcare sector and his role in bringing about several regulatory changes relating to licensing, import restrictions, organ transplantation, etc.
