The counter terrorism team is made up of many organisations across the UK with local authorities having a plan to manage terrorism in their area. Their role is to Pursue / Prepare / Protect / Prevent. Alan gave examples of work undertaken i.e. preparation of the Olympics with focus on the sailing at Weymouth & Portland harbour. Radicalisation in the area and how the various groups such as ISIS, al Qaeda, Extreme Right Wing, Irish Republican work to draw young people in. Alan finished his talk by underlining that we are the best people to notice changes in behaviour that might mean a young person is being drawn in to such organisations. If we are worried there is an anonymous hotline – 0800 789 321. Members asked many questions throughout this talk.

Alan was thanked for what was an insightful talk.

Sue Outhwaite, Snooks Hat Shop, Bridport

Sue introduced herself and her colleague Liz (a Portrait Artist) who among other interests has been involved in the Bridport Hat Festival. Sue came along with several boxes filled with many hats of every style and colour – just a few to mention - Trilby, Top Hat, Bowler, Pork Pie, Fedora, Gambler and Boater plus the Panama which Sue was clear to explain was not a style of hat. Panama means that it is handmade in Ecuador using the Toquilla Palm and only if these three criteria are met is it a true Panama. As Sue talked us through the history of Snooks (1896 to date) and the story of the various hat styles members were encouraged to try them on and have some fun – which we did! Some members even modelled them. Sue took Q&A and the meeting finished with Sue being thanked for an interesting and lively presentation enjoyed by all members.

The raffle was drawn and the meeting closed.

Anna Kent: Her experiences as a nurse/midwife with Médecins Sans Frontières.

Anna gave a very personal and honest talk about her experiences as a nurse and midwife with the MSF organisation. Anna now lives and works for the NHS in Dorset but over the last twenty years has worked as a volunteer in war torn countries, refugee camps and disaster zones. (South Sudan, Pakistan, Haiti) Her experiences, the impact it had on her own mental health, on people and in particular the struggle women have to protect themselves and their unborn babies without access to medical care inspired Anna to tell their story and write her book ‘Frontline Midwife.’

Anna answered many questions and signed copies of her book for any member who purchased a copy.

Marisa thanked Anna for taking the time to come to the meeting sharing her experiences with members.
