Peep Shows are spaces which display pornographic films or presents live an erotic show in cabins for consumption of pornography, sometimes using a coin machine to charge the viewing. If in contemporary times, the uses of the word Peep Show have sexual connotation, we find the rudimentary principle of peep show in the work of Leon Battista Alberti and Filippo Brunelleschi in the fifteenth century. The Peep Show is a box with an "eye" in which the viewer sees a miniature scene, painted or constructed in perspective. Sometimes called Rarre-show was initially a scientific curiosity. Thru the Renaissance until the nineteenth century we can find different models. In 1660, Samuel Van Hoogstraten developed the idea of Filippo Brunelleschi, creating a series of wooden boxes, without one side to let in light. The three-dimensional illusion was given by the five sides of the box painted in perspective and also distorted. The Peep Boxes represented the interior of Dutch houses. By 1730 Martin Engelbrecht created miniature theaters consisting of five to eight individual cards that were placed consecutively in the peep box, resulting in a play. Common life scenes were portrayed. Many of these performances were traveling and displayed on city streets. Sometimes these theaters were accompanied by a history teller who described the story. These devices have become popular toys for children, some equipped with movable scenery or wooden figures, thus becoming in youth theaters in the nineteenth century.

The advent of pre-cinema can be found at the Chicago World's Fair (1893) a pioneering invention. Thomas A. Edison, backed by the Scottish W.K. Laurie Dickson and the French Eugène Lauste introduced the Kinetoscope. The film instead of being projected on a screen was display in a box with a spyglass, on which the curious leaned to watch the show that was presented. The Kinetoscope is one of the first devices to watch movies, creating the illusion of movement. Using a cylindrical phonograph could hear sound. We could find several of these devices in San Francisco in 1889 in a Penny Arcade room. Thus they became a fair attraction.

Os Peep Shows são espaços onde se exibem filmes pornográficos, ou se apresenta ao vivo um show erótico em cabines destinadas ao consumo de pornografia, utilizando por vezes um aparelho de moedas para cobrar o visionamento. Se, na contemporaneidade, os usos da palavra Peep Show têm conotação sexual, encontramos o princípio rudimentar do peep show no trabalho de Leon Battista Alberti como Filippo Brunelleschi no século XV. O Peep Show consiste uma caixa com um “olho”, no qual o observador vê uma cena em miniatura, pintada ou construída em perspectiva. Por vezes chamado Rarre-show foi inicialmente, uma curiosidade científica. Na Renascença até ao século XIX podemos encontrar diversos modelos. Em 1660, Samuel Van Hoogstraten desenvolveu a ideia de Filippo Brunelleschi, criando uma série de caixas em madeira, sem um dos lados para que entrasse luz. A ilusão tridimensional era dada através dos cinco lados da caixa, pintados em perspectiva e também distorcidos. As Peep Boxes representavam o interior de casas holandesas. Por volta de 1730 Martin Engelbrecht criou teatros miniatura que consistiam entre cinco a oito cartões individuais que eram inseridos consecutivamente na peep box, resultando numa peça de teatro. Cenas da vida comum eram retratadas. Muitos destes espectáculos eram itinerantes e exibidos nas ruas das cidades. Por vezes, estes teatros eram acompanhados por um interlocutor que descrevia a história. Estes aparelhos tornaram-se populares brinquedos para crianças, alguns equipados com cenários movíveis ou com figuras de madeira, transformando-se assim em teatros juvenis no século XIX.

No advento do pré-cinema podemos encontrar na Exposição Mundial de Chicago (1893) uma invenção pioneira. Thomas A. Edison, secundado pelo escocês W.K.Laurie Dickson e pelo francês Eugène Lauste, apresentou o cinetoscópio. A película em vez de ser projectada numa tela, desfilava numa caixa munida dum óculo sobre o qual os curiosos se debruçavam para observar o espectáculo que lhe era apresentado. O cinetoscópio é um dos primeiros aparelhos para ver filmes, criando a ilusão do movimento. Utilizando um fonógrafo cilíndrico podia-se ouvir som. Podíamos encontrar vários destes aparelhos em São Francisco em 1889 numa sala Penny Arcade. Tornaram-se deste modo numa atracção de feira.
