They say that "The Bridge" is a passage to the other side, but when this passage is transformed into a place propitious to suicide, the other side is a metaphor for death. The Golden Gate Bridge is the most popular site in the world, not for its beauty and views of the San Francisco Bay, but by ordinary people seeking suicide, signaling there one death every two weeks. The structure opened in 1937, is similar to the 25 de Abril bridge in Lisbon which is also venue for people in despair.
Tad Friend, who in 2003 wrote an article in the New Yorker about who is searching there for a dip to death, defends the existence of a kind of fatal attraction; that the bridge has on those who seek it the end. Jumpers the article in question was based on the vision of Eric Steel, which turned into a documentary. The director spent 2004 filming the bridge deck and recorded six falls among the more than twenty mortals who saw this year. A ponte de Golden Gate é o local mais procurado no mundo, não pela sua beleza e vistas sobre a baía de São Francisco, mas sim por pessoas comuns que procuram o suicídio assinalando-se ali um óbito em cada duas semanas. Estrutura inaugurada em 1937, assemelha-se à ponte 25 de Abril, em Lisboa que também é local escolhido por pessoas em desespero.

Jumpers, o artigo em questão, esteve na base da ideia de Eric Steel, que transformou num documentário. O realizador passou o ano de 2004 a filmar o tabuleiro da ponte e registou seis quedas entre as mais de vinte mortais que esse ano viu. Tendo decidido um conjunto de regras com a guarda costeira, ao longo do ano de vigilância, a pronta acção da patrulha chegou mesmo a evitar seis saltos.
As críticas dirigidas ao documentário são as do voyeurismo mórbido, pois é uma intrusão do realizador nas vidas privadas de outros. Este, contudo, lembra que as mortes aconteceram em local público e que se limitou a filmar o que qualquer um pode ver. Aliás, não é a natureza do próprio documentário uma janela indiscreta sobre os seres humanos? O que está em questão é a própria morte ser filmada, nomeadamente a morte auto-infligida. O último tabu é agora visualizado nas salas de cinema, em facto público. E a interminável curiosidade voyeurística da natureza humana será satisfeita.
