General Results for Venetian Stores

After cataloguing every store in Venice, our team has created a map of all of the store locations in Venice, as shown below.

We found that there are a total of 4980 stores in the six historic districts of Venice, with San Marco having the highest density of stores in the city.

Ways of Analyzing Stores in Venice

Besides cataloguing all of the stores in Venice, we also analyzed the stores catering to tourists, residents, and both tourists and residents. We analyzed these stores in different ways: analyzing the tourist stores by the density of tourist beds (in hotels and B&Bs) of each island and analyzing resident stores by the population density of each island. The maps we created are shown below.

Ways of Analyzing Change in Stores in Venice

We also looked at how the stores have changed over the years. We analyzed the stores that changed from catering to residents to tourists and from tourists to residents as well. We looked for corrolations between these changes and the population change and the change in tourist bed density, as shown below.

Finally, we analyzed the stores that closed by looking at the population loss of each island.

Standardized Coding System

Another major goal of our project was standardizing the classification of stores and accommodations. We accomplished this by formatting and refining the NACE coding system used in Europe. An example of how the system works is shown below.

Our team is working with Chris Pinola to upload all of the data we collected onto the Venice Stores website. You can see all of the stores in Venice and filter them by the product type or by the year the data was collected.
