After a week of rest we have finally arrived in Venice and survived our first week here. The first week pretty much consisted of getting settled into our apartments, learning to use our maps and sense of direction, working on our project, eating a lot of gelato, and experiencing our first acqua alta.
The phone app we will be using to collect data, InputApp, isn’t ready so we focused on straightening out our methodology, and working with the data collected by previous groups. We met with our advisors twice, and they directed us to go over previously collected data thoroughly so we can make sure the database is consistent and what is missing. We explored the city by walking through all six districts and finding our starting point for data collection. On our adventure we crossed a bridge from San Marco to Dorsoduro over the Gran Canal and realized that the picture of the banner on our website was taken somewhere around there, so we had to take a group photo there (above). We also had a team lunch on Tuesday at a restaurant in Dorsoduro and a group dinner with everyone on Thursday, which was a great opportunity to see how everyone was doing settling in.
Everything is now becoming more familiar, our apartments starting to feel like home, we are improving our Italian food-related vocabulary, and getting used to the absence of drying machines here. We are hoping we can start collecting data soon and spend more time exploring this gorgeous city. A presto!
