On 22 June 12 Pm Val set off on the new extended Balclutha Half Marathon, last years trace was 900 metres short which meant all athletes were pleased with their times.

The uphill, gravel road start meant that the runners were spread out inside the first K, and Val found herself in front of a small group who decided to stick just behind her.

This continued to the 10 k mark when the following lady stopped to take on sustenance, she ran hard over the next few K to catch up to Val who was sticking to her planned pace. At the 15 K drinks stopped the same happened only this time the following lady did not make back the gap that had formed and the gap between the following man was increasing with every k.

With approximately two K to go Val faced the first of the two large steep hills that were between her and the finish with a 7 second lead on the following lady.

Val kept this lead right to the finishing line where she was placed 6 overall woman and first in the over 50 women in 1:43:11.
