Still no news from the SHU Helpdesk. I will submit a comment to Kevin on the Blackboard service when I next get time. In the meantime I have started building my Dell PowerEdge server to run Windows Server 2012, and Microsoft SQL Server 2012.
I have selected the Microsoft operating system and SQL server as I have previous experience as an SQL Database Administrator on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (although it was a long time ago now!) and its free to download via Microsoft DreamSpark www.dreamspark.com
The intention is to build a split configuration of IIS (Internet Information Services) server on a virtualised OS, and SQL on the physical machine. This provides a secure setup for home hosting.
Figure 1 - Diagram of network topology of the server environment.
In figure 1 the virtualised IIS environment is placed within a DMZ for Internet based access and the SQL server behind the DMZ to prevent unauthorised persons gaining access to the database within the home network. This would help prevent against any data loss, as the User Guardian tool will be holding companies users account information.
