Canterbury District Health Board candidates

I am standing for Environment Canterbury (Christchurch North)and the District Health Board.

Neither of these organisations has a role in the formation of cycle lanes or promotion of cycling (including utility cycling) over other forms of transport. For me to imply anything else would be deceptive.

This sounds like I am avoiding the issue, but that isn't the case. I am strongly in favour of all forms of cycling and used to cycle regularly.

Unfortunately it is difficult for me to cycle now as I damaged my knees in a motorbike accident some years ago.

I would like you to answer two questions please:

1. Why do you think that people haven't shown an interest in utility cycling here?

2. As a candidate for the Health Board I am concerned that not wearing helmets would undo all the good work in reducing head injuries in cyclists, especially in children.

As there are more racing cycles and mountain bikes here, they are more likely to travel faster.

Do you have any information on head injuries in countries with a high population of cyclists?

Yours sincerely

Dear Alan,

Thanks for answering my questions. I really do appreciate your response.

I have a friend in Nelson who has just bought one of the bicycles you are

talking about. He is waiting for it to come into the country now.

Unfortunately though it is extremely expensive (I think he said $20,000)

Most NZers are unable to afford this.

There are areas in Chch where cyclists and walkers share the same

facilities. Eg by the Museum, and in Hagley Park. As a walker, I find it

very dangerous having a group of cyclists racing towards me, so I’m not sure

what the best way to go is.

Best wishes

With your campaign
