Supplies needed:
1. Tattoo examples to draw (below)
2. scissors, glue sticks
3. drawing pencils and sketchbooks (or paper)
4. 1/2 and 1/2 drawing handout (below)
Instructions:
1. Give handout to students
2. Student pick an image from the pile of examples.
3. They need to cut the image in half. They can do this diagonal, horizontal or vertical.
4. Students glue one half of the image in their sketchbooks and use the other as reference.
5. With the other half of the image, students rub pencil on the entire back, line it up with the part glued in their books and trace the lines. When they trace the outline of the image, the pencil will transfer to the paper in their sketchbook. Because the focus of this assignment is value and not necessarily drawing the object.
6. Using the cut image as reference, students will mimic the type of value used in the picture (pressure shading, cross hatching, hatching, stippling or loose line) and the range of value (lightness and darkness) so that when you look at the image you can't tell which is the photocopy and which is the drawing.
