Oxford University emerged the winners of a truncated Top Gun held at OSC on January 30/31st
Conditions on Saturday were good a shifting moderate breeze enabled two complete round robins to be run. On completion of the first round Edinburgh were leading and Southampton 2 were last, but places were very tight with a lot of teams in third place. Despite the cold and a dropping breeze the second round robin was complete by 5pm and everyone shot into Oxford for the dinner.
On arrival at Farmoor on Sunday, the sound of powerboats trying to break the ice could be heard in the car park and it became obvious by 10.30 that no sailing would be possible today. The event was, therefore, abandoned at 10.30 with Oxford as the winners based on the round robins sailed on Saturday.
The Warwick Turtle also took place this weekend - They had two lovely team racing days, though cold. Enough wind for close tactics; sunshine most of the time; the snow had melted from the umpire boats by mid-day and the club had sanded the pontoon so the ice sheet was not a problem; the snow shower on Sunday, though accompanied by an increase in the breeze, did not last above 10 minutes and then the wind returned to pleasant. Once Birmingham had returned home on Saturday morning to collect their sails and had arrived back, we had three flights and the programme ran pretty smoothly. Winners were Royal ThamesYC.
