Woodland

Woodland is a dispersed hamlet within the civil parish of Broughton West in the Furness region of Cumbria , and is located in the southern part of the Lake District National Park, west of Coniston Water, between Torver and Broughton-in-Furness (Wiki). Woodland has no identifiable village centre (the traditional cluster of homes around a village shop) but a more beautiful and peaceful setting it would be hard to imagine. Scattered homes along winding country lanes - conversions, many of them, from the old railway station, the post office, the village school.

Woodland lies about 4 miles south west of Torver.

St John the Evangelist's Church, Woodland

The church was built in 1864–65, and was the third church to be built on the site. The earlier churches had been built in 1698 and 1822. The present church was designed by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley, having been designed by him in 1862. It cost nearly £1,000 (equivalent to £90,000 in 2016), and provided seating for 150 people. In 1868–69 a parsonage was built for the church, which was also designed by Paley.
