Disc Clean & Defrag.

Doing these tasks regularly will speed up your computer nicely.

Start button (bottom left of screen) – All programs – Accessories – System tools.

Click on Disc Cleanup and click OK.

When it has done its business a box comes up showing the mess in Download Program Files, Temporary Internet Files etc.

Click OK.   It will ask: Are you sure you want to permanently delete these files.  Yes you are.  Click Delete files.

Job done.

Start button (bottom left of screen) – All programs – Accessories – System tools.

Click on Disc defragmenter.

You can do this manually by following the instructions, but it is far better to set the schedule and stop worrying about it.

In the box, click Configure schedule

Set the timings – monthly should do and I chose 12 noon when I’m having lunch. And that’s it. It will work all by itself.

An extra tip:  if you want to do these things regularly, the disc defrag can be set to schedule as shown, but you can place a shortcut to one or both of these programmes onto your desktop:

Start button (bottom left of screen) – All programs – Accessories – System tools.

Right click on each in turn - Send to... Desktop (create shortcut).  Now you can access them without the Start button business.

You can also create a Desktop file to put them in by right clicking on a bare space on the desktop - New - Folder. Add a title: 'Disc Cl & Defrag' or whatever suits. Drag and drop (left click on the icon, hold down and drag) each into the file.
