1. In a broadband context, what is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous communications?

Asynchronous is when the download and upload speed is different.

Synchronous is when the download and upload speed is the same.

2. What is latency?

It is the time between when you send a command to a server and when the command gets acknowledge and comes back to you.

3. From Eli’s point of view, what is the difference between business and residential service?

Business class service gets better guarantees services and treated better, but cost more. Residential service is poorer and can take about five days to get service.

4. Explain the difference between a static and dynamic IP address.

Static IP addresses never changes, and dynamic IP addresses changes once in a while.

5. Why might an organization want a static IP address rather than a dynamic IP address?

You would want a static IP address when you have web servers and have people that want to connect to you. Also you would want static IP address to avoid email filters from blocking your emails.

6. Why would an ISP block a particular port?

They do not want certain people such as residential class customers to user certain services.

7. What is an SLA?

Service level Agreements. It is what her service providers agrees what the service you get is such as internet speeds and service uptime.

8. When would you use a T1 line?

You should use a T1 line when DSL isn’t available in the area, or you need a stable connection that is always on.

9. What are two advantages of a T1 line?

You get a SLA, and you can get the connection where DSL isn’t available.

10. What is the primary disadvantage of a T1 line?

You do not know what speed you are actually getting because of fractal T1 lines.

11. What is the primary advantages of carrier class Ethernet?

The primary advantages of a carrier class Ethernet is that it includes a SLA agreement and a synchronous connection of up to 50Mbit/s.

12. In wireless networking, what does unlimited internet mean?

Your connection is unlimited to computers and downloads unlimited amounts of data with that internet connection.

13. In an old building, what could be a problem source concerning DSL Service?

They can only put up DSL service in their telephone line. You cannot get a telephone service from Verizon and an internet service from another company. Old buildings have bad cabling will cause bad service and speeds.

14. With a cable connection, what type of problem could be associated with a trunk line?

Everyone in the neighborhood shares that line. It could be slower when everyone uses it at the same time.

15. From a business perspective, what is a potential weakness of Cable?

No SLA and you will probably get slow speeds if everyone is using the trunk line.

16. What is FIOS?

Fiber Optic Service and it is a super-fast internet connection.

17. What is the reason that you probably don’t want a satellite connection?

It has high latency.
