A surface development or net is a shape cut from sheet material, cardboard or other flat material to make a 3D form. Developments can be used for any 3D shape. If you thinks of a 3 dimensional object such as a milk cartoon, then cut this down one side and unfold it. This is development of the object.
The following links will give you information on the creation of developments (or nets as they are call in Mathematics) for different shapes from simple cubes and cylindrical shapes to complex truncated (cut) objects.
