Business:

Motion: That the general subscription for 2003 be raised from $15.00 to $20.00 for Ordinary Members and from $10,.00 to $15.00 for Concessional members..

This motion was debated and Rosemary asked how many Concessional members we had. Kendall answered that we had three and Rosemary suggested an amendment to the Motion along the lines that we raise only the full subscription are leave the Concessional rate as it stands.

Matthew questioned the need for the rise in the subscription and Louise Marshall asked if it were a question of paying Speakers. Kendall said that SMRG Inc has so far not had to pay speakers as they are often our own Members, but added that it would be nice if we could occasionally pay an honorarium to international scholars visiting Australia: at the moment we miss out on such.

Lynn Olson asked why we needed the rise if we also maintained a roll-over fund proving that we had money enough. Matthew supported this point and emphasised that we do not need to pay for public liability now either.

Luke further explained that the increases in the subscription last year were made in the expectation of paying Public Liability Insurance, but now that this was gone we could continue to operate with more financial assurance.

Kendall said that in view of the fact that well known Scottish scholars (Macleod and Lenman) had cancelled their visit to Australia in August because none of the small societies could contribute enough to meet their air fares, it would be a Good Thing to have a little more income than we receive from our Members giving public talks and lectures. She also observed that although our costs are not great they are not static either.

Motion: That the general subscription for 2003 be raised from $15.00 to $20.00 for Ordinary Members but that the rate for Concessional members remain at $10.00

Proposed: Rosemary

Seconded: Kendall.

Passed: Nem. con.
