Paw Paw River

Introduction

The Paw Paw River offers a little over 60 miles of paddling through mostly beautiful wooded flood plains colored brightly during the fall with Paw Paw trees. The paddling along the river is mostly remote, very scenic in places and requires good paddling skills to manuever around the many tree falls. The river bottom is mostly sandy and shallow until you get below Riverside, MI where it becomes deeper as you get closer to its confluence with the St Joe River. In low water (<6 feet at Riverside gauge), average paddle times can be about 1.5-2.0 mph and in higher waters (>6 feet at Riverside gauge) around 2-2.5 mph.
