JORDAN - Cluster Manager

Kia ora koutou,

My name is Jordan Walker and I’m the cluster support manager for the Kootuitui area (South Auckland). I’m coming toward the end of my second year at Massey University, where I’m studying Social Anthropology and English Literature.

In my spare time I love to write! I find it to be a rewarding creative outlet to express how I feel. I also try to articulate relations between people around me — this helps in creating interesting characters for the stories that I write.

Last year I wrote a play, Young Mana, for Park Estate School in Papakura. It’s about a young Māori boy who struggles with his cultural identity, but throughout the play (with the help of a young girl, Tui), and the encouragement of his mother, Mana discovers his pepeha. There’s a lot of Māori mythology incorporated in to the play to keep the narrative as closely connected to our roots as possible.

I’m originally from Gisborne, the East Coast, so I find that the area of South Auckland is incredibly familiar to my upbringing.

I really look forward to working with the kids in the Kootuitui area — we’re going to have heaps of fun!

CADENCE - Blogger

Kia Ora,

My name is Cadence Harvey and I am so excited to be a part of the 2017 Summer Learning Journey team. I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Education degree and really looking forward to teaching next year.

I was born and raised in a beautiful country called Papua New Guinea where I was home-schooled for a few years with my two big brothers. My family has travelled a lot, so I was able to experience many places growing up like Australia, Philippines, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and travelling up and down New Zealand too. Lots of fun and lots of memories!

I enjoy writing, reading, cooking, playing music and painting. I also love snowboarding so Mt Ruapehu is my second home! During my holidays I like to travel with family and friends exploring as much of New Zealand as I can.

I’m thoroughly looking forward to reading your blogs and learning alongside you!
