JORDAN - Cluster Manager

Kia Ora koutou,

My name is Jordan and I’m the returning Cluster Manager for the Summer Learning Journey programme in Kootuitui (South Auckland). I’m coming toward the end of my BA undergraduate at Massey University where I’m studying Anthropology and English Literature.

I grew up in Gisborne on the East Coast, and have just moved back to Aotearoa after 7 years living in Australia. The area of South Auckland reminds me a lot of Gisborne and I’m passionate about helping out as much as I can!

In my spare time I love to write; I believe that it’s a rewarding outlet that helps me express how I feel. I like to observe people around me, and this helps in creating interesting characters for the stories that I write. I also love to read, particularly about our heritage.

In 2015 I wrote a play, Young Mana, for Park Estate School in Papakura. It’s about a young Māori boy who struggles with his identity, but with the help of a young girl, Tui, and the encouragement of his mother, Mana, discovers his pepeha.

I’m constantly keen to learn more about Māoridom and have recently incorporated Māori Studies into my degree. There is a lot of Māori mythology woven into the play to keep the narrative as closely connected to our roots as possible.

I really look forward in returning to work with the kids in the Kootuitui area — we’re going to have heaps of fun!
