The Solo v5.4 is a next-generation design in the Solo series. The design incorporates the tried and proven Active Output Transformer (AOT) circuits to achieve 60 watts RMS of clean power into 8 ohms, while weighing a mere 8 Lbs, including the maple or mahogany wood trim that gives the head a distinctive look and robust feel.
The Solo v5.4 is a full-feature design, incorporating options and controls that make the amp a "go-to" tool for any musician, at home, studio, or live venues. The design is a collaboration with David Anderson, a skilled musician, luthier, and nautical engineer. David built a customized Solo v4.3 amp and contributed great ideas skills for this project.
60 watt RMS of clean continuous output provide plenty of headroom and sheer power from the AOT output stage. A twin triode phase-inverter and two class-A tube output drivers are coupled to dual push-pull semiconductor stages to deliver rich tube tone and nuance to the speakers.
Two preamp channels are selected by foot-switch or front panel (Mode) switch. The clean channel is just that, reproducing pristine guitar tones or faithful renditions of pedal tones. It has it's own gain control to match the overdrive (OD) channel. The OD channel Drive control sets the degree of sustain and overdrive. Two independent OD sources in the OD channel are blended to produce a range of overdrive tones and characters. One OD source is a conventional cathode follower (CF) circuit that is widely used in many tube preamps. The other source is unique to the v5.4 and is a complete single-ended (SE) output stage. These two sources offer different compression, tone, and character, and they are blended with a Colour control. The two OD sources offer greater flexibility and sound richer than a single signal path. Of course, you can also combine pedals with the clean and OD channels to create endless new variations. The v5.4 amp will take any pedal and level without problem.
The v5.4 EQ options are unparalleled, providing wide range with minimal knob tweaking. The tone stack includes Bass, Mid, and Treble controls with wide range (up to +/-18 dB). The settings are highly independent so adjustments are precise and free of annoying interactions. A 3-poition Tilt switch is a novel feature that sets overall EQ for the amp, much like a pickup switch sets overall EQ for a guitar. In combination, Tilt and pickup selections multiply the range of tones available from any guitar. A 3-position Hi-Cut switch controls the very high frequencies (presence), if desired.
Internal effects include triple-spring analog reverb and a novel tremolo that modulates amplitude or harmonics (phase). Amplitude modulation (AM) is a common effect (think bias-tremolo) and v5.4 has a lush, deep, and smooth modulation over a wide range of speeds. Harmonic modulation (HM) v5.4 is an effect that modulates frequency content with a phase-shift. Both tremolos are fully analog and add another layer of tone options to the v5.4 palette.
As already mentioned, the v5.4 is a full-feature design. The amp has two foot-switch options. A three button foot-switch with LEDS (provided with the amp) connects via a DIN5 connector. A two button foot-switch with LEDs (optional) connects via a TRS connector. External effects are connected via a buffered TRS effects-loop. A TRS Aux input and level control provide a direct power amp input. A transformer-isolated TRS balanced/unbalanced line-output provides an accurate and noise-free signal.
A precision aluminum chassis and cabinet complete the v5.4 package. The amp is available in limited quantities and by special order only. It is carefully hand-crafted to ensure the highest quality. Contact me or David for inquiries.
