Appendix 27

Letter from the Bishop of Plymouth to Mr Weld

To E. Weld Esq. St. Mary’s Stonehouse

Aug 5th 1853

My dear Mr. Weld,

I inclose some papers relative to the Trust you were so kind as to undertake with myself for Amelia Pritchard of Spettisbury. I will send the deed by Mr. Brindle from Exeter on Tuesday for your perusal and signature.

From it you will see that Miss Pritchard has an annuity of £50 from the East India Company; & another of £72 from the Manse property. These together with any property she is, or may become entitled to, are made over by the deed to us as Trustees, & a paper of instructions, which I will send you with the deed, directs the disposal. There is also a will of which I have not a copy here, but which I read at Spettisbury, simply making us her Executors. The receipt I inclose is that which clears all liabilities of the Manse estate in favour of Miss Pritchard up to the 5th April following the death of Louis Manse, grandfather of Amelia Pritchard. This we have to sign, the money having been given to the Bankers for the convent of Spettisbury.

For the future it will be sufficient if we write a joint letter, such as I inclose, to the Trustees of the Manse Estate directing them to pay the annuity of £72 in quarterly payments to Messrs. Cocks & Co, to our acct, and another to Messrs Cocks & Co directing them to pay the same to the account of Mrs. Poynter of Spettisbury Convent.

As the East India Company has been in the habit of paying the £50 annuity to the Bankers of the Convent on their receipt for Miss Pritchard, I think it will be as well to let that arrangement run on as it is; & merely receive an acknowledgement from Mrs. Poynter (the Superioress at Spettisbury) of the receipt of the £50, & the £72, & that they have been laid out according to the instructions, together with a receipt from Joanna Mary Jones, to whom a portion is allotted by Miss Pritchard.

If this arrangement meets your approbation, I shall feel obliged if you will sign the receipt & letters, & send them to me by Mr. Brindle, as I shall be in Dorsetshire next week & will have them forwarded by Mrs. Poynter from Spettisbury.

Hoping you are all well, & begging most kind remembrances to Mrs.W. & all the little ones.

I remain

Yours sincerely

Geo Errington
