The Burial Ground

The small burial ground where so many nuns, priests, canons, pupils and some parishioners were buried was the one part of St. Monica’s which was carefully excluded from the sale when the Ursuline nuns left in 1926.

The Village Garden

From time to time a party of nuns from Mortain come to visit the Burial Ground as they still feel strong ties with Spetisbury.

Many of the headstones in the Burial Ground are lost and of those that remain, some are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to read. Here are a few that if has been possible to interpret.

The Village Garden

For many years the Burial Ground was totally neglected and forgotten but in 1977 it was rescued by the village and turned into a Village Garden. The remaining old gravestones, with their inscriptions uppermost, were laid flat making a pathway to a seat, the gift of Mr Maurice Tory and family of South Farm.
