Saab Information
Is generally true, but geared towards 99- when the naming scheme changed to the “9-x“ type.
- Engine number: letter, 3 numbers, and a letter.
I.E.: “B204L”
- “Bxxxx”-engine type. B=gas, D=diesel
- “x20xx”-displacement
- xxx4x”-block&head. Mostly matters on 4cyl and indicates # of cams and balancing shafts. 1=single cam, 2=dual cam, 4=dual cam&dual balance shaft, etc.
- “xxxxL”-Output/H.P.. S=turbo w/o inter-cooler, R=high output, L=normal, E=low/economy

9440. 9-3 03-
9600. 9-5 all.
Model types (different precise meaning for each model/year)
- Viggen=highest output and trim level for 9-3
- Aero=highest performance, sport tuned susp, highest trim level for 9-5
- Linear=base model

99-03 General notes
- Saab recommends 10k services for driving in “normal” conditions. We will recommend 5k.
- On 9-3 pollen filters recommended at 20k, on 9-5 they are recommended at 30k. We will recommend both at 20k.
- Coolant and brake fluid are inspected but not part of the schedule at 30/60k, so I have removed them from our kits. Saab recommend brake fluid every 2 years and coolant every 3.
- 6 cyl B308. Timing belt due every 60k. First belt change @60k is done by Saab dealer for free. The tensioner is not part of Saabs schedule. It should be very carefully examined and recommended unless there is proof that it has already been replaced. Our kit only has timing belt and serp belt. There is an additional labor kit with the tensioner and idler. Tensioner list for $317.
- 9-3 and 9-5 get the all the same things at each service. However, the different engines get different parts. I have made labor kits and parts kits, but they are not attached. When writing a 30k or 60k, the correct technique is to post the labor, and then use the “kits” button and find the correct parts kit for the service you are selling and the engine in the vehicle. All the Saab parts kits start with the letters “SB”.
- Labor times in the kits need tweeking.
03- 9-3 General notes:
- After 03 all 9-3 are on the 9440 chassis and have a new schedule except the convertibles which are still on the 9400 chassis.
- After 03 Saab has gone to a condition-based schedule like BMW or MB. There are 3 basic services. “Intermediate”-an oil change service, “Main”- The “tune up”, and “Annual”, for those who don't drive the required miles per year to get an intermediate and basically just adds the pollen filter to the intermediate.
- 03-05 has set up the service indicator to come on at 15k and “Main” services at 30k ,In 06- the indicator will come on around 10k miles, and main services are due at 20k intervals, so that the later/new cars would get a pollen filter at 20k/40k instead of 15k/30k.
- There is a different, less involved intermediate service for cars with less than 30k on them. The intermediate kit in our system follows the “after 30k” checklist.
- Spark plug at 60k.
- Drive belt still at 60k.
- 03-05 Trans fluid first scheduled at 90k.
- 06- trans fluid scheduled at 60k.
- 03-05 Air filter is 30k/60k
- 06- Air filter is 40k/80k
- All Ca/US vehicles fuel filter in tank/not serviceable
- 5spd transmission takes 3309. 6 speed takes a different fluid, pt# 93 165 147. Doing research on availability.
- The B284 6 cylinder is slightly different, mostly on pollen filter intervals. We will use the 4 cylinders 20k interval.
- Official recommended brake fluid interval is 4 years. We should continue to recommend two years due to proximity to ocean and high humidity.
- I cant find any recommendation of either time or miles on coolant. They think the coolant is lifetime fill. Tards.
- They do now recommend full synthetic mobile1.
- What we will recommend: 10k interval for services and follow the Saab 06- and up schedule, and encourage more frequent oil services due to a)turbo charges, b) Saab historical sludging issues.
9-5 General notes (still in process)
- After 03 there no B308/6 cylinder 9-5's
- 03-05 the 9-5's are still on the same schedule as previous.
- Starting 06:
- the first pollen filter will be at 30k
- spark plugs, air filter and drive belt moved to 40k
- A/T fluid still at 60k.
- Second drive belt at 70k.
