St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute Trust serving South West London and Surrey. The renal unit is situated at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, with twelve consultant nephrologists looking after 2 million patients. The unit is staffed by 6 full time renal StRs with the on-call rota covered by these 6 and 2 research StRs, making it a one in eight non-resident on-call. A renal SHO is always resident in the unit. The StRs work through six weekly blocks of ward cover on each of the three renal wards (there are approximately 60 inpatient renal beds), care of the chronic dialysis patients and an outpatient block. There is weekly StR protected renal teaching, as well as a weekly renal unit seminar, X-Ray and histopathology meetings and the usual hospital grand round and meetings. Attached to the unit is a thriving, purpose built, research institute and StRs are strongly encouraged to become involved in ongoing projects and are similarly encouraged to participate in clinical research and audit.
The unit is committed to providing care close to patient’s homes and five satellite haemodialysis facilities have been developed. There are also numerous consultant-led outreach nephrology clinics throughout Surrey. Transplantation is undertaken at St George’s Hospital in Tooting; however, the full work up of the patients takes place at St Helier and the patients return to us following discharge after transplantation. There is an active living donor program. Four renal and transplantation surgeons based between St Georges and St Helier run transplantation and donor assessment clinics at St Helier, as well as regular access clinics and two access lists a week providing a comprehensive access service. There are regular low clearance, CAPD, haemodialysis, and vasculitis clinics all providing excellent learning opportunities. You will be trained in line insertion (opportunities for complex case training), LAPD assessment/insertion, native and transplant biopsies. All these factors contribute to making the unit a busy but friendly and exciting place to work.
