A brief outline of the structure of Renal training in South London.
Health Education England (HEE) is the national leadership organisation responsible for ensuring that NHS education, training and workforce development drive the highest possible standards of public health and patient outcomes. HEE is divided into 13 Local Education and Training Education Boards (LETBs). The LETB that is responsible for our training is Health Education South London (HESL). There are two other providers for medical training in London; Health Education North West and North Central and East London.
The London Deanery used to be the main body responsible for training, but has since passed on and risen again in the form of Shared Services, which provides all three LETBs with support services. King's Health Partners (KHP) is the lead provider for renal medicine in South London. Other hospitals (non-KHP) that provide training on the rotation are known as local education providers (LEPs).
The GMC provides doctors with a licence to practise, and is responsible for revalidation. As resident doctors, revalidation occurs annually at the ARCPs. The Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB), merged with the GMC in April 2010. The Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians' Training Board (JRCPTB) sets and reviews the criteria set out by the General Medical Council (GMC), and is responsible for the e-portfolio, which allows all resident doctors to log all evidence of their experience, competencies and courses over the entire period of medical training.
